Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Fallen

Z
Three months later.
The United States Federal District Court in Chicago was packed to absolute capacity. Media cameras lined the steps outside, while inside, every bench was filled with reporters, legal observers, and curious citizens following the most publicized corruption trial in Illinois history.
Sitting at the defense table, dressed in dull orange prison jumpsuits, were Daniel Grayson and Vanessa Reed.
Without their designer clothes, professional makeup, and pristine public relations team, they looked hollow, pathetic, and broken. Vanessa’s eyes were sunken, her roots growing out grey and unkempt. Daniel sat with his head bowed, unable to meet the eyes of anyone in the courtroom.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, holding Clara’s hand tightly.
The honorable Judge Rebecca Vance (no relation to Victor) banged her gavel, bringing the court to order.
"In the matter of the United States versus Daniel Grayson and Vanessa Reed," Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "The jury has reached a verdict."
The jury foreman stood up, holding a piece of paper.
"On Count 1: Federal Mail and Wire Fraud... we find the defendant, Daniel Grayson, GUILTY. We find the defendant, Vanessa Reed, GUILTY."
A gasp swept through the courtroom.
"On Count 2: Embezzlement from a Charitable Organization... GUILTY for both defendants."
"On Count 3: Aggravated Money Laundering... GUILTY for both defendants."
"On Count 4: Criminal Negligence Contributing to the Death of a Minor... GUILTY for both defendants."
At the mention of Sofia’s death, Vanessa buried her face in her cuffed hands, weeping uncontrollably. Daniel simply closed his eyes, slumping back into his chair as if all air had been pulled from his lungs.
Judge Vance looked down from the bench with absolute disgust at the two defendants.
"Mr. Grayson, Ms. Reed," Judge Vance said, her voice sharp as steel. "In my twenty-five years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed a display of greed, callousness, and moral bankruptcy equal to yours. You stole from sick children. You betrayed the trust of your family. And worst of all, you allowed an innocent eight-year-old child to die while you pursued your own decadent pleasures."
She paused, adjusting her glasses before delivering the final sentence.
"Daniel Grayson: I sentence you to thirty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Daniel let out a pathetic sob, dropping his head onto the defense table.
"Vanessa Reed: I sentence you to thirty-eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Vanessa shrieked, turning toward the gallery, her wild eyes searching for me. "Emma! Please! I’m your sister! Tell them to stop! Please, Emma!"
I stood up slowly, looking directly into Vanessa’s desperate, tear-streaked face. I didn't say a word. I simply adjusted the purple ribbon wrapped securely around my wrist, standing straight and silent as the bailiffs dragged both of them out through the side door to serve their sentences.
The courtroom broke out into chaotic noise as reporters rushed to file their stories. Clara turned to me, putting a warm hand on my shoulder.

"It's over, Emma," Clara whispered. "Justice was served."
"No, Clara," I said softly, watching the empty doorway where my sister had been dragged away. "Justice was just the beginning. Now comes the healing."
