Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The text message echoed in my mind like a siren. Ask why Sofia’s blood type didn't match Daniel’s.

I stood in the underground parking garage of the corporate headquarters, the engine of my SUV humming softly in the damp chill. My hands were shaking against the leather steering wheel.

Sofia’s medical files were ingrained in my memory. I had memorized every chart, every lab result, every dosage calculation over eight agonizing years. She was blood type O-negative—a rare, universal donor type. Daniel had always boasted about being an O-negative donor himself, claiming that Sofia had inherited her "rare resilience" from his side of the family.

I grabbed my phone and dialed Dr. Aris Thorne, the lead pediatric cardiologist who had treated Sofia at Chicago General Hospital.

"Emma?" Dr. Thorne’s voice was weary when he answered on the third ring. "I was so sorry to hear about what happened at the service... it’s been all over the news. Are you holding up okay?"

"Aris," I cut straight through the pleasantries, my voice tight. "I need you to check Sofia’s original genetic screening files from her admission four years ago. The full panel."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "Emma, those files are sealed medical records. Why are you asking about this now?"

"Aris, please," I begged, my voice breaking slightly. "I need to know. What was Daniel’s recorded blood type on the family donor registry?"

I heard the rapid click of a keyboard over the line as Dr. Thorne accessed the hospital’s secure database. Seconds dragged by like hours. The ambient drip of water in the concrete parking structure sounded like a ticking clock.

"That's strange..." Dr. Thorne muttered under his breath.

"What is it?"

"Daniel Grayson registered as a directed donor for Sofia during her first surgery in 2022," Dr. Thorne said slowly, reading off the screen. "But his donor profile was flagged and rejected by the blood bank."

"Why was it rejected?"

"Because Daniel Grayson’s blood type is AB-positive," Dr. Thorne revealed. "An AB-positive father cannot biologically produce an O-negative child with a mother who is blood type A-positive—which is what Vanessa’s records indicate."

The world seemed to spin on its axis. The steering wheel felt slippery under my numb fingers.

Daniel was not Sofia’s biological father.

"Emma? Are you still there?" Dr. Thorne’s anxious voice came through the speaker.

"Who... who was listed as the secondary donor match?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard it was painful.

"There was no secondary family match," Dr. Thorne replied. " caller... wait, there’s an override note attached to the file signed by your father, Richard Reed, dated six years ago. It authorized an anonymous, high-priority donor profile from a private clinic in Zurich."

"Zurich?"

"Yes. The profile code is listed as 'LZ-990.' That's all the medical registry shows."

I closed my eyes as a horrifying realization began to crystallize in my mind. The pieces of a sinister puzzle were violently snapping into place.

Vanessa’s endless indifference toward Sofia. The secret offshore transfers that went back four years—not just nine months. The text message mentioning 'Project Lazarus' and my father's private vault at First National Bank.

Sofia hadn't just been a child to Vanessa and Daniel. She had been a tool—a bargaining chip in a cold, calculated game that involved my father, my husband, and my sister long before I ever discovered their affair.

"Thank you, Aris," I managed to say before hanging up.

Ten minutes later, I was walking down the marble hallway of First National Bank's private wealth management division in downtown Chicago. As the sole executor of my father’s estate, I had full access to his private safety deposit box—a vault he had maintained for over thirty years and had explicitly instructed me never to open unless "the foundation was threatened."

The elderly vault keeper verified my biometric scan and inserted the master key into Box 408. With a heavy metallic click, the long steel box slid out of the wall.

"You may use Private Room B, Mrs. Grayson," the keeper said politely, stepping back.

I carried the metal box into the small, soundproof room and locked the door behind me. My hands were trembling violently as I lifted the lid.

Inside lay three items:

A thick leather-bound ledger marked Project Lazarus - 2006.

A sealed envelope bearing my name in my father's distinctive handwriting.

A encrypted flash drive with a physical key code pad built into its casing.

I opened the letter first. The paper was crisp, yellowed around the edges, smelling faintly of my father's favorite pipe tobacco.

Dearest Emma,

If you are reading this, it means the illusion has shattered. It means Vanessa and Daniel have allowed their greed to swallow whatever humanity they had left, and you have finally pulled the thread.

I owe you an apology that no words can ever fulfill. I built an empire, but in doing so, I allowed monsters to feed at my table. Vanessa is not who you think she is. And Sofia... God forgive me, Emma, Sofia was never Daniel's daughter.

Sixteen years ago, to secure the initial funding for Northbridge Holdings, I entered into a dangerous pact with Victor Vance. When the deal went wrong, Vance demanded a bloodline guarantee—a controlling interest in the Reed family legacy. Vanessa volunteered.

Sofia was the product of that union—conceived through an offshore clinic in Switzerland to fulfill a financial debt to Vance's estate. Daniel agreed to pretend to be her father in exchange for a lifetime executive position and ten percent equity in Northbridge.

They never loved her, Emma. To them, Sofia was simply an insurance policy. A living contract that kept Vance's offshore syndicate from seizing our company. But you... you loved her with every piece of your soul.

In the ledger, you will find the evidence to destroy Vance, Daniel, and Vanessa forever. But be warned: the moment you use it, you will attract the attention of men far more dangerous than your husband.

Protect yourself, my brave girl.

Your father, Richard.

I sat frozen in the dimly lit vault room, tears streaming down my face, dripping onto my father's handwriting.

The horror was unimaginable. Sofia—my innocent, sweet little girl who loved purple ribbons and drew silly pictures of sea turtles—had been created as a financial bartering tool for corporate greed. Vanessa hadn't just neglected her; she had viewed her as a living ledger entry. And when Sofia’s health began to fail, she became a liability rather than an asset.

My sorrow dissolved instantly, replaced by a dark, terrifying rage.

I picked up the ledger and the encrypted flash drive, packing them securely into my bag.

As I walked out of the bank into the blinding afternoon sunlight, my phone rang. It was Detective Vance.

"Emma," Vance’s voice was urgent. "We have a situation. Daniel Grayson’s bail was just posted."

I stopped dead on the sidewalk. "What? You said the judge set bail at five million dollars! His accounts are frozen!"

"An anonymous corporate entity registered in Delaware wired the funds ten minutes ago," Vance said grimly. "Daniel is out. And Emma... his legal team just filed an emergency motion for a restraining order against you, claiming you are hiding corporate assets. He's heading to your house right now with a court officer to reclaim 'his personal property.'"

I gripped the strap of my bag, my teeth gritted so hard my jaw throbbed.

"Let him come," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "I’m waiting for him."
