Chapter 18

I raised my customized pistol and fired four rapid,

highly precise shots at the exposed tires of the leading vehicle,

shattering the front axle and forcing it to slide helplessly into a deep ditch,

where it flipped completely over with a catastrophic crash.

Lily was already at the massive bunker entrance,

frantically scraping away decades of rust from the emergency electronic keypad,

her fingers working in absolute desperation as the remaining mercenaries began to dismount.

The security protocol is using an archaic twenty-four-bit encryption loop,

she yelled through the freezing wind,

and she quickly jammed a hardwired data probe into the exposed circuitry.

I need exactly ninety seconds to force a systemic buffer overflow,

she added,

while automatic rifle fire began to chip away at the concrete walls around her head.

I ran back to the rear of our smoking truck,

pulling a heavy,

military-grade grenade launcher from the secure storage compartment,

and I quickly aimed it at the remaining mercenary squad taking cover behind the debris.

Eat this,

I shouted,

and I fired a high-explosive round directly into the center of their defensive perimeter.

The resulting blast completely obliterated their position,

sending a massive shockwave of heat and shattered concrete through the dark courtyard,

and permanently silencing the heavy automatic gunfire that had pinned us down.

Lily let out a sharp cry of absolute relief as the massive bunker doors groaned loudly,

their heavy hydraulic seals releasing with a deep,

mechanical hiss that sounded like a dying beast.

The doors slowly parted just wide enough for us to squeeze through,

and we slipped quickly into the pitch-black subterranean corridor beyond,

forcefully throwing the manual emergency locking lever to seal the entrance completely.

The heavy concrete doors slammed shut with an incredibly deep,

reverberating thud,

cutting off the sound of the pouring rain and the distant,

burning wreckage entirely.

We were plunged into absolute,

suffocating darkness,

broken only by the faint,

flickering green indicator lights on Lily's digital tablet.

We are officially underground,

she whispered,

her voice echoing strangely down the long,

hollow concrete tunnel that stretched out into the deep earth.

The primary server architecture should be located on the lowest sub-level,

she noted,

but the internal schematics show a highly complex network of defensive countermeasures.

I clicked on a high-intensity tactical flashlight mounted to my weapon,

casting a sharp,

piercing beam of white light down the damp,

decaying hallway,

revealing walls lined with rusted pipes and thick,

black bundles of armored data cables.

The air was incredibly thick,

smelling heavily of ozone,

mold,

and stagnant water that had collected over decades of complete abandonment.

Keep your eyes sharp,

I warned her softly,

and I began to lead the way down the sloping corridor,

stepping carefully over the pools of dark water and fallen debris that littered the floor.

The silence was completely absolute now,

so intense that the sound of our own breathing and the soft click of our tactical boots,

felt incredibly loud and entirely dangerous in the enclosed space.

We had successfully broken through their perimeter,

May you like

but I knew that the algorithm we were hunting was far from defenseless,

and we were walking directly into the jaw of a highly advanced electronic trap.
