Chapter 24

The massive security glass behind us suddenly shattered with a deafening,
explosive crash,
and a line of heavy tactical response teams burst into the main server vault.
They didn't ask for our immediate surrender,
and they opened fire with high-caliber automatic weapons,
the rounds chewing through the metal floor plates with a terrifying speed.
I grabbed Lily by her tactical vest and pulled her down behind the reinforced console,
returning fire with my customized pistol until the slide locked back on an empty chamber.
I am entirely out of ammunition,
I yelled through the absolute chaos of the deafening room,
and I threw the useless weapon onto the floorboards with a curse.
The upload progress bar on the main terminal screen hit exactly ninety-nine percent,
the final file packet hovering in the digital ether for what felt like an eternity.
Suddenly,
the screen flashed a brilliant,
bright green confirmation message:
UPLOAD COMPLETE. GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION INITIALIZED.
In an instant,
every digital monitor in the massive vault,
and every television screen,
smartphone,
and computer terminal on the entire planet,
began to display the classified files of Vanguard Global Dynamics.
The tactical team stopped firing almost immediately,
their wireless earpieces exploding with a chaotic torrent of frantic orders from their superiors.
The entire corporate infrastructure was collapsing around them in real-time,
their stock prices plunging into absolute nothingness,
and international arrest warrants being issued for their board members.
The lead commando looked at me through his dark visor,
slowly lowering his weapon,
and he gave a tight,
respectful nod before leading his team out of the room.
The war was finally,
completely over,
and the truth had set us permanently free from the shadow of the machine.
Lily slumped against my shoulder,
letting out a long,
ragged breath of absolute,
unadulterated relief,
and she slipped her tablet into her pack for the final time.
We did it,
she whispered,
a beautiful,
genuine smile breaking through the grime and exhaustion on her face.
We walked out of the corporate tower together,
stepping out into the bright,
warm morning sun of the Geneva streets,
completely invisible among the chaotic crowds of people staring at their phones in shock.
We had completely destroyed the mechanical heart of the beast,
May you like
and we had rewritten our own destinies with our own two hands,
ready to finally live our lives without ever looking back into the shadows again.
