Chapter 23: The Bell Tower Siege

Chapter 23: The Bell Tower Siege

The spiraling stone staircase of the St. Jude bell tower was suffocatingly narrow. Eleanor led the charge, her flashlight cutting through the gloom, Julian covering the rear. Muffled gunfire echoed from the main administrative building. The Obsidian Trust wasn't just here for Leo; they were leaving no witnesses.

"Leo!" Eleanor shouted as she reached the heavy oak trapdoor at the top. She pounded on the wood. "It's Mom. Open up."

For a heart-stopping second, there was silence. Then, the sound of a heavy iron bar scraping across wood. The door pushed open, and Leo’s face appeared, pale and streaked with dust. Eleanor hauled him up, pulling him into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"Are you hurt?" she demanded, framing his face with her hands.

"No," Leo stammered, clutching a heavy brass candlestick as a makeshift weapon. "But they have the whole building surrounded. I saw them from the window. There are at least twenty."

Julian hoisted himself into the belfry, immediately moving to the arched stone windows. He peered through the scope of his rifle. "Kid's right. They've got the perimeter locked down. Thermal scopes. Drones. They aren't trying to capture us, Eleanor. This is an execution."

"They underestimated the terrain," Eleanor said smoothly, her tactical mind overriding her maternal panic. "Leo, do you have your laptop?"

"Always in my backpack," he said, pulling it out.

"Julian extracted a drive from Thorne’s dead-man switch. I need you to bypass its encryption and link it to the school's PA and lighting systems."

Leo blinked, then his fingers flew across the keyboard. "What's the play, Mom?"

"We don't fight them in the dark," Eleanor said, loading a fresh magazine. "We blind them with the light."

Three minutes later, footsteps pounded up the stone stairs. The mercenaries were coming. Eleanor nodded to Leo. He hit 'Enter'.

Suddenly, every single floodlight on the campus ignited simultaneously. The deafening blast of the school’s emergency lockdown siren blared through the PA system, a physical wall of sound. Outside, the drones crashed as the sudden frequency shift jammed their signals. The mercenaries in the courtyard screamed, dropping their weapons to clutch their ears and shield their night-vision-equipped eyes.

In the chaos, Julian kicked open the trapdoor and tossed down a flashbang for good measure. The explosion rocked the tower.

"Move!" Eleanor ordered. The three of them descended the stairs like phantoms, stepping over the incapacitated operatives. They had won the battle, but as Eleanor looked at the terrified eyes of her son, she knew the war had just begun.
