Part 13

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan was a sea of glittering chandeliers, silk gowns, and tailored tuxedos. The low hum of sophisticated conversation and the clinking of champagne glasses filled the air. Standing near the entrance, Maria felt a sudden wave of vertigo. She was wearing a simple but elegant midnight-blue dress that Priya had helped her choose, but her hands were trembling so violently she had to interlock her fingers to hide it.
Daniel was by her side, a towering figure of quiet confidence. He seemed to sense her anxiety, lightly placing a reassuring hand on the small of her back. "You look beautiful, Maria. And you are ready."
As the evening progressed, Daniel introduced Maria to several key board members and potential donors. While most were polite, Maria could see the underlying curiosity—and sometimes condescension—in their eyes. They knew her story; the media had widely covered the downfall of Vanessa Cole and Daniel’s sudden appointment of his former housekeeper to run his multi-million-dollar charity.
During the cocktail hour, a sharp-faced woman in an emerald gown approached them, flanked by a small group of socialites. It was Evelyn Vance, a prominent figure in the New York charity circuit and a close friend of Vanessa Cole's family.
"Daniel, darling, what a fascinating initiative," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. She then turned her cold eyes onto Maria, scanning her from head to toe. "And you must be Maria. It really is quite a modern fairy tale, isn't it? From holding a broom to holding the purse strings of a massive endowment. Tell me, dear, isn't it terribly overwhelming? Dealing with millions of dollars must be quite a leap from calculating the cost of cleaning supplies."
A tense silence fell over the immediate circle. Priya, standing nearby, stiffened, ready to step in, and Daniel’s jaw tightened, his eyes darkening with immediate defense.
But before Daniel could speak, Maria took a step forward. The fear that had plagued her all week suddenly crystallized into a cold, calm clarity. She looked Evelyn dead in the eye, her posture straight and dignified.

"You're entirely right, Mrs. Vance," Maria said, her voice clear and carrying across the quieted circle. "It is a massive leap. When you manage cleaning supplies, you are responsible for maintaining a building. But when you manage a foundation like this, you are responsible for human lives. In my old job, if I made a mistake, a floor stayed dirty. In this job, if I make a mistake, a child goes hungry. I assure you, I take the latter responsibility far more seriously than anyone who views charity as merely a social hobby."
Evelyn’s smile froze, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson. A few surrounding guests muffled surprised gasps, and Daniel’s lips twitched into a proud, unmistakable smile. Maria had found her footing, and the night was just beginning.
