Part 16

However, the road to rebuilding lives was rarely without friction. Two months into the Stamford project, a significant crisis hit. Priya called an emergency meeting at the Greenwich estate, her expression grim as she laid out a series of financial documents on the living room table.

Daniel and Maria sat together, sensing the tension. "What's wrong, Priya?" Maria asked, her heart sinking slightly.

"The construction company we contracted for the center's renovation, Apex Building Group, is stalling," Priya explained, tapping a pen against a spreadsheet. "They’ve requested a third budget increase, claiming unforeseen structural damage in the building's foundation. If we don't pay the extra three hundred thousand dollars, they're threatening to halt construction indefinitely. If they stop, the opening will be delayed by at least four months."

Maria frowned, studying the line items. "Four months? That means fifty families who were counting on our daycare next month won't have a place for their kids. Mothers will lose their jobs if they can't go to work."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed with corporate suspicion. "Apex was vetted thoroughly, but I know their CEO, Marcus Vance. He’s Evelyn Vance’s brother-in-law. This isn't a structural issue, Maria. This is retaliation for what happened at the gala, and an attempt to drain our resources."

"Can we sue them?" Maria asked, her voice rising with anger.

"We can," Daniel replied, his tone calculating. "But litigation takes months, sometimes years. If we fight them in court, the building sits empty, rotting in the winter weather, and the project dies before it begins. Marcus knows this. He thinks we'll either pay the extortion or abandon the site."

Maria stood up, walking to the window, looking out at the foggy lawn. She thought about the mothers she had met, the little children who needed a safe, warm place to learn. She felt a familiar fire rising in her chest—not the fear of a victim, but the protective rage of a mother.

"No," Maria said turning back to face Daniel and Priya, her eyes flashing with determination. "We are not paying them another dollar, and we are not waiting for a court date. I know how people like Marcus Vance operate. They think because they have power, they can bully anyone beneath them. They think I'm just a former maid who doesn't know how to fight. Let's go down to the site tomorrow morning. I want to look Mr. Vance in the eye."

Daniel watched her, a slow, admiring smile spreading across his face. "I'll call my security team and my primary legal council. We’ll meet him together."
