Part 4

The flight across the ocean was a blur of absolute silence. Daniel sat in the leather captain's chair of his private jet, staring out into the black void of the Atlantic night. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Sophia’s small, bare feet on the kitchen tile, looking at an empty bowl. He thought about his own past—growing up with a mother who worked three jobs just to keep the lights on, knowing exactly what it felt like to look at a refrigerator and see nothing but empty shelves. He had promised himself he would never let that kind of helplessness exist near him again.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Greenwich, the sun was beginning to rise over the Hayes estate. The house was completely quiet, save for the hum of the washing machines in the back hall.
Maria was kneeling on the floor of the laundry room, her hands trembling as she folded a fresh stack of Egyptian cotton towels. She hadn't slept more than two hours the night before. Her mind was racing with figures—calculating how much she could stretch her remaining twenty dollars until her next paycheck. She had managed to tuck a small package of peanut butter crackers into the bottom of Sophia’s toy box, but she lived in constant terror that Vanessa would find them.
Sophia was sitting quietly on a small stool in the corner of the laundry room, hugging the stuffed elephant Daniel had brought her months ago. "Mama," she whispered, her voice tight with a maturity no three-year-old should possess. "Is the mean lady going to take my breakfast again?"
May you like
Maria dropped the towel she was holding, rushing over to pull her daughter into her lap. She squeezed her tight, burying her face in Sophia’s soft curls to hide the tears leaking from her eyes. "No, sweetie. I have a little box of raisins hidden in my pocket just for you. We just have to be very quiet today, okay? Just until Mr. Hayes comes home next week."
She didn't know that Mr. Hayes was already descending through the clouds above JFK Airport, his car waiting on the tarmac with the engine running.
