Part 5

The tension in the mansion reached a boiling point by mid-morning. Vanessa had woken up in a foul mood, aggravated by a text from her mother about a minor detail regarding the wedding flowers. She walked through the grand hallways like a storm cloud, looking for anyone to take her frustration out on.

She found her target when she walked into the kitchen and saw Sophia standing near the refrigerator.

The little girl was standing barefoot on the cold kitchen tile, both hands wrapped around an empty plastic bowl, when Vanessa Cole leaned down and smiled at her like hunger was something shameful.

“You don’t belong here,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cutting through the quiet room.

Three-year-old Sophia Lopez did not understand cruelty yet, not the grown-up kind that came dressed in silk and diamonds. She only understood that her stomach hurt, that her mother had promised there was macaroni in the refrigerator, and that the beautiful lady with the shiny engagement ring had just taken it away.

“I’m hungry,” Sophia said, so softly the words almost disappeared beneath the hum of the stainless-steel refrigerator.

Vanessa’s smile widened, sharp and devoid of any human warmth. “That sounds like your mother’s problem.”

She reached out to grab the empty plastic bowl from Sophia's hands, intending to throw it into the trash just to prove her absolute authority. But before her manicured fingers could touch the plastic, the heavy oak front doors of the estate swung open with a deafening crash that echoed through the marble foyer.

Footsteps hurried across the floor—heavy, deliberate, and furious.

"Step away from the child, Vanessa."

The voice didn't sound like Daniel. It was deep, guttural, and so terrifyingly cold that the entire kitchen seemed to freeze instantly. The two kitchen staff members who had been quietly prepping vegetables in the corner dropped their knives, paralyzing themselves against the counter. Vanessa froze mid-motion, her face turning completely white as she turned around to find her fiancé standing in the doorway.
