Chapter 19 - The First Cry

The months that followed brought a peaceful era to Chicago that the underworld had not seen in decades.

Meridian Freight expanded its legitimate logistics operations across the Midwest,

becoming a titan of commerce free from the shadows of extortion,

embezzlement,

and corruption.

The federal trials of Enzo Santoro and the Vance siblings concluded swiftly,

resulting in maximum life sentences without parole in federal supermax prisons.

The syndicate capos in the outer boroughs fell into complete alignment,

recognizing that challenging Dante Moretti was nothing short of suicide.

And in the sprawling penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan,

life took on a rhythm of quiet domestic warmth.

I sat in my study,

reviewing shipping manifests,

when a soft patter of tiny footsteps echoed down the hardwood hallway.

The door pushed open slowly.

Little Elena,

now walking on steady,

hesitant legs,

toddled into the room,

her big curious eyes fixating on my desk.

Behind her walked Nora,

smiling warmly as she leaned against the doorway.

“I think she wants to check your spreadsheets,

Dante,

” Nora teased.

I stood up immediately,

walking around the desk and kneeling down on one knee.

Little Elena giggled,

reaching out her tiny hands and grabbing onto my lapel with surprising strength.

I scooped her up into my arms,

lifting her high into the air as she squealed with delight.

“Is that right?

” I asked,

looking up at Nora with a rare,

genuine smile.

“Does the future chief accountant want to inspect the ledger?

” “Only if it balances out to zero,

” Nora laughed,

walking over and wrapping her arms around both of us.

I pulled them close,

resting my cheek against my daughter's soft hair.

For twenty years,

my rule had been absolute.

Numbers don’t lie.

People do.

But holding my family close against the warm Chicago sunset,

I knew that some truths defied all math.

Love was real.

Loyalty was earned.

And my empire was finally secure.
