Chapter 8 - The Accountant’s Ledger

Back at the Gold Coast safehouse,
the tension had shifted from defense to offense.
Nora sat at the main terminal,
her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with astonishing speed.
The external hard drives seized from Vito Rossi’s warehouse were plugged directly into the central array,
downloading encrypted offshore bank records.
I stood behind her,
watching the scrolling lines of financial data cascade down the screens.
“How long?
” I asked.
“Ten minutes,
” Nora replied,
not taking her eyes off the display.
“Vito wasn’t just laundering Enzo’s money.
” “He was keeping a double ledger for the syndicate capos in the outer boroughs.
” “Every bribe paid to city officials,
every kickback from the port authorities,
every illegal shipment of contraband.
” “It’s all right here.
” “Can we trace the political connections?
” I asked.
“Especially District Attorney Vance.
” Nora paused,
glancing up at me with wide eyes.
“District Attorney Vance?
You think he’s involved?
” “Enzo lived too comfortably for a simple underboss,
” I explained,
crossing my arms.
“Federal indictments kept missing our primary shipping routes for three years.
” “Somebody high up in the justice system was feeding him information.
” “Let me check the encrypted communication logs,
” Nora whispered,
her fingers flying across the keys again.
A folder labeled ‘PROJECT OMEGA’ materialized on the screen.
She clicked it.
A series of scanned wire transfer receipts and encrypted email exchanges appeared.
The recipient of the largest bribe payments wasn’t a low-level bureaucrat.
It was District Attorney Marcus Vance’s brother,
Assistant U.
S.
Attorney Thomas Vance.
My jaw tightened.
The corruption ran deeper than I had ever imagined.
It wasn't just a corporate embezzlement scheme.
It was a systemic conspiracy designed to dismantle Meridian Freight from the inside out and hand the monopoly over to a rival syndicate backed by corrupt government officials.
“They were planning to indict me next week,
” Nora whispered,
reading an email addressed to Enzo from Thomas Vance.
“They were going to pin the entire eighteen-million-dollar fraud on me,
throw me in federal prison,
and ensure I never testified.
” “And once I was locked away,
” I added coldly,
“Enzo and his political allies would seize control of my entire logistics network.
” “A clean corporate takeover masked as a federal corruption bust.
” Nora looked up at me,
her face pale,
her hands trembling.
“What are we going to do,
Dante?
” “Do?
” I smiled,
a dark,
dangerous expression that promised total annihilation.
