Chapter 5 - The Breach at Meridian Freight

“Drop the weapon,
Enzo!
” Viktor shouted,
rushing into the boardroom with three armed security operatives behind him.
Enzo’s hand froze mid-motion inside his jacket.
Slowly,
deliberately,
he withdrew his empty fingers,
raising them in the air.
His eyes remained locked on mine,
burning with raw,
unadulterated hatred.
“You think you’ve won,
Dante?
” Enzo laughed,
a harsh,
grating sound that bounced off the glass walls.
“You think Meridian Freight belongs to you forever?
” “It belongs to whoever has the stomach to hold it.
” “And you’ve grown old,
old man.
” “You’re distracted by a pregnant bookkeeper.
” “While we speak,
my men are already tracking her down.
” My grip on the firearm tightened,
my finger resting lightly against the trigger.
“Say that again,
” I whispered dangerously.
“You heard me,
” Enzo smirked,
blood trickling from his split lip where he had bitten it in frustration.
“Even if you kill me here,
the syndicate won’t let you keep running things like a benevolent dictator.
” “The capos in the outer boroughs are already backing me.
” “They want a new era.
” “A profitable era.
” “Without Dante Moretti.
” I didn’t blink.
I didn't flinch.
I simply pressed the barrel harder against his throat until he winced.
“Viktor,
” I said without looking away from Enzo.
“Boss?
” “Take this trash down to the sub-basement holding cells.
” “Interrogate every single associate he has in the organization.
” “Find out who else took his money.
” “And Viktor?
” “Yes,
Dante?
” “Double the security detail at the Gold Coast safehouse immediately.
” “If a fly lands within a mile of Nora,
I want to know about it.
” “Understood.
” Viktor and his men surged forward,
grabbing Enzo by the arms and wrestling him toward the private service elevator.
Enzo thrashed and cursed as they dragged him away,
his voice echoing down the hallway until the heavy steel doors slid shut.
I lowered my gun,
slipping it back into my shoulder holster.
The remaining board members stood frozen in their seats,
too terrified to breathe.
“Meeting adjourned,
May you like
” I said coldly,
walking out of the room without looking back.
