Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of a Heist

Dr.

Marcus Vance stepped out of the examination room,

wiping his hands with a sterile cloth.

His expression was grim,

carrying the weight of professional concern.

“How is she?

” I asked,

turning away from the window.

“Physically,

she’s battered,

” Marcus reported,

leaning against the edge of the sleek oak desk.

“Severe bruising along the ribs and wrists,

mild concussion,

and acute psychological shock.

” “What about the baby?

” “Miraculously,

the fetus is stable,

” Marcus sighed,

shaking his head.

“Twelve weeks along.

” “Another week of that kind of violence,

and she would have lost the child.

” My fists clenched inside my pockets,

the leather groaning under the pressure.

“She’s resting now,

” Marcus continued.

“I gave her a mild sedative to calm her nervous system.

” “Good.

” I walked past him and pushed open the door to the adjoining study,

where three computer monitors glowed against the darkness.

On the center screen sat Nora’s encrypted external hard drive.

I plugged it into the secure terminal,

typing in the master bypass key.

Folders upon folders of financial transactions filled the display.

At first glance,

the $2.

5 million deficit looked like a clumsy accounting error.

But as I ran my proprietary forensic algorithms through the ledger,

a intricate web of deception unraveled before my eyes.

The money hadn’t vanished into thin air.

It had been siphoned in increments of forty-nine thousand dollars over six months—

just below the threshold that triggers federal money-laundering alerts.

Every single transaction was routed through shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands and Panama.

And attached to the metadata of the final transfer was a digital signature.

Not Nora’s.

Enzo Santoro’s personal administrative terminal.

He had used Nora’s login credentials during her scheduled lunch breaks,

bypassing security protocols while she was away from her desk.

He thought she wouldn't notice.

Or worse,

he planned to eliminate her before the quarterly audit exposed the discrepancy.

The door opened softly,

and Nora stood in the doorway.

She was wearing an oversized cashmere sweater,

her face pale,

her hair tied back in a loose ponytail.

“You shouldn’t be out of bed,

” I said quietly.

“I heard you typing,

” she replied,

walking slowly toward the desk.

“Did you find it?

” “I found everything,

” I answered,

turning the monitor toward her.

“Enzo didn’t just steal two and a half million.

” “He’s been skimming from Meridian Freight for three years.

” “Total amount: nearly eighteen million dollars.

” Nora gasped,

covering her mouth with her hand.

“Eighteen million?

” “Enough to buy a small island and disappear,

” I said coldly.

“Or enough to fund a private mercenary army to usurp my empire.

” She looked down at her hands,

tears welling in her eyes again.

“He said he loved me,

Dante.

” “He said we would take the money and start a new life together in Europe.

” “And then?

” “And then I found out about his wife in Rome,

” Nora whispered,

her voice cracking.

“When I told him I was pregnant and refusing to help him embezzle another cent,

he changed.

” “He stopped being a lover.

” “He became a monster.

” I stepped forward,

placing a reassuring hand on her fragile shoulder.

“Listen to me,

Nora.

” “No one touches my people and walks away.

May you like

” “Not even my underboss.
