Grant never answered.
Instead, he straightened his tuxedo and stepped onto the stage as applause filled the ballroom.
"Thank you all for believing in the Mercer Foundation," he began with effortless confidence.
Three floors above, Emma was being rushed toward the operating room.
Dr. Monroe spoke quickly.
"We're losing time."
Nurse Linda nodded.
"The attorney is on line two."
She handed Emma the phone.
"Emma?" Nolan Brooks' calm voice came through the speaker.
"I'm here."
"They said the Hawthorne Clause."
Emma closed her eyes through another contraction.
"Activate everything."
"You understand what that means?"
"Yes."
"It immediately removes Grant Mercer from every medical, financial, and trust decision connected to you and your daughter."
"I know."
"And once it's activated..."
"There is no reversing it."
Emma whispered one final sentence.
"He already made his choice."
"I'll make mine."
Nolan hung up.
Within sixty seconds, emails reached Whitestone Medical Center's legal department.
Grant Mercer's medical authority was revoked.
His security credentials inside the maternity wing were suspended.
