Chapter 4 – A Father Arrives Too Late

Grant ran toward the elevators.

For the first time that evening, fear finally reached him.

The maternity floor was quiet.

Too quiet.

He hurried toward Emma's room.

His access badge flashed red.

ACCESS DENIED.

"What?"

A nurse stepped into the hallway.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Mercer."

"My wife is in surgery."

"I know."

"I need to see her."

"You no longer have authorization."

Grant stared.

"I am her husband."

The nurse spoke gently.

"Legally, you're no longer her medical representative."

The operating room doors opened.

Dr. Monroe removed her surgical mask.

"The baby is alive."

Grant exhaled in relief.

"And Emma?"

"She's stable."

"Can I see them?"

Dr. Monroe hesitated.

"Not until she gives permission."

Grant lowered his head.

For the first time in years...

Money couldn't open a door.

Influence couldn't erase a decision.

Power couldn't replace trust.

He sat alone in the empty hallway until sunrise.
