Part 4

Veronica began walking slowly around the large study.
She touched the expensive leather books on the shelves.
She looked at the priceless art hanging on the walls.
"You actually think Ethan cares about you?" Veronica laughed.
It was a cold, hollow, mocking sound.
"He is a billionaire, Rosa. You are just a charity case he pities."
Rosa stood firmly by the door.
She kept her voice as steady as possible because Lily was now hiding behind her skirt.
"Please leave, Miss Veronica. I don't want any trouble."
"Trouble?" Veronica smiled wickedly.
"Oh, you don't even know what real trouble is yet."
Veronica opened her expensive designer handbag.
She reached inside and pulled out an exquisite diamond necklace.
It was a priceless Mercer family heirloom.
Ethan’s late mother had passed it down to him before she died.
Rosa watched in absolute confusion as Veronica walked over to the corner of the room.
There stood the cleaning cart Rosa had brought in earlier.
Veronica reached out and slipped the diamond necklace deep into the side pocket of the cleaning cart.
Rosa’s eyes went wide with horror.
She instantly realized exactly what was happening.
"No," Rosa gasped, taking a step forward. "What are you doing?"
"Me?" Veronica asked, acting completely innocent.
"I am just finding my missing necklace."
Veronica pulled out her phone.
She didn't call Ethan.
She dialed the emergency police line instead.
"Hello? I’d like to report a grand theft at the Mercer penthouse. My diamond necklace was just stolen by the maid."
Rosa felt the entire world spinning around her.

The trap had snapped shut.
And there was absolutely no escape.
