Chapter 14 - The Unraveling

The digital drive arrived at Marcus's office the next morning.

The contents were devastating,

a complete blueprint of Gideon's duplicity.

There were audio recordings of him laughing about how easy it was to deceive me,

how he considered me too weak to ever fight back.

Hearing his voice through the speakers,

so cold and dismissive,

felt like a bucket of ice water poured over my soul.

"He really thought you were a ghost,

Clara,"

Marcus said gently,

turning off the audio file.

"He thought you would just fade away."

"I almost did,"

I whispered,

staring at the floor.

"I spent three years doubting myself,

thinking I was the problem.

I thought if I was just a better wife,

a more beautiful hostess,

he would love me."

"He is incapable of love,

Clara,"

Marcus said firmly.

"He only understands power.

And now,

we have the power to strip him of everything."

The legal team prepared a supplemental filing for the court,

including Felicity's evidence.

The news broke that evening,

a secondary explosion that completely leveled Gideon's remaining credibility.

The interim CEO of Knightley Media Group issued a formal statement apologizing to the shareholders and announcing full cooperation with the federal investigation.

Gideon was entirely isolated,

holed up in his hotel suite,

refusing to see anyone.

Barrett had resigned that afternoon,

unable to handle the legal liability any longer.

The billionaire was alone in the dark,

surrounded by the ghosts of his choices.

He picked up his glass of whiskey,

staring at his reflection in the window.

He had thought himself a king,

but he was just a man trapped in a prison of his own arrogance.

The final court date was set for the following week,

the end of the line.
