Chapter 19 - The Exhibition

The gallery in Mayfair was filled with the sound of clinking glasses,
soft music,
and low,
appreciative murmurs.
The elite of London's art world had gathered for the opening of Clara Sterling's exhibition,
entitled "The Unwelcome Table."
The walls were lined with my paintings,
each one illuminated by soft spotlights that highlighted the texture and depth of the oil.
I wore a simple black silk dress,
no jewelry except for a pair of vintage pearl earrings that belonged to my grandmother.
I didn't need the flashing diamonds or the expensive watches Gideon used to buy me to show me off.
I was the center of attention because of my work,
my talent,
and my survival.
People approached me throughout the evening,
offering praise,
not pity.
They didn't see the betrayed billionaire's wife anymore;
they saw a rising artist with a powerful voice.
Marcus Vance stood near the entrance,
watching the crowd with a proud expression,
a glass of champagne in his hand.
"You did it,
Clara,"
he said as I walked over to him.
"The entire collection has been sold out within the first hour."
"I can't believe it,"
I whispered,
looking around the crowded room,
my eyes watering slightly.
"It feels like a dream."
"It's not a dream,
it's your reality,"
he countered gently.
"You built this yourself."
As I looked across the room,
I noticed a figure standing near the back,
partially hidden by a stone pillar.
My heart skipped a beat as I recognized the sharp jawline and the dark hair,
though he was dressed in a simple cloth coat.
Gideon.
He had come to London,
not to fight,
not to beg,
but to see the world I had built without him.
He caught my gaze,
and for a long moment,
the entire room seemed to disappear.
He didn't move forward,
knowing he had no right to cross the distance between us.
He simply raised his glass in a silent,
respectful toast,
a tear slipping down his cheek.
Then, He turned and walked out into the London night,
leaving me surrounded by the light of my own creation.
I took a deep breath,
May you like
turning back to my guests,
feeling absolutely nothing but peace.
