Chapter 1 - The Price of Admission

The Grand Ballroom of the Winthrop Estate in Boston smelled of ancient mahogany,
Vintage champagne,
And suffocating arrogance.
Crystal chandeliers cast a harsh,
Glittering light over the city’s oldest dynasties.
Julian Vance stood near the towering arched windows,
Adjusting his tie.
It was a standard,
Off-the-rack black suit—
Neat,
But completely out of place among the bespoke,
Gold-threaded tuxedos of the Boston elite.
Clara Winthrop,
His girlfriend of two years,
Squeezed his arm nervously.
Her family had ruled New England’s financial sector for over a century.
To them,
Julian was nothing but a charity case—
A middle-class scholarship kid from Chicago who had managed to snag their precious heiress.
"You don't have to stay here,
Clara,"
Julian whispered,
His voice calm despite the cold glares directed their way.
"I can handle them."
"No,
Julian.
I want them to see you the way I see you,"
Clara pleaded,
Her eyes shining with tears.
But the illusion of peace shattered instantly as Charles Winthrop III,
Clara’s older brother,
Swaggered over.
He was flanked by three of his wealthy,
Snickering friends.
In his hand,
Charles held a crystal glass filled with deep red Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Confrontation.
"Well,
Well.
Look what the tide washed up on Beacon Hill,"
Charles sneered,
His voice loud enough to silence the surrounding chatter.
Guests began to turn,
Sensing blood in the water.
"I thought we made it clear that the servants' entrance is in the back,
Julian."
"Charles,
Stop it!"
Clara snapped,
Stepping between them.
"Step aside,
Clara,"
Charles barked,
His face flushing with aristocratic rage.
He looked Julian up and down with pure disgust.
"I'm tired of watching this parasite drag our family name through the mud.
Let’s call a spade a spade.
You’re a pathetic,
Penniless gold-digger trying to claw your way into a fortune you could never earn in ten lifetimes."
Julian didn’t flinch.
He kept his hands in his pockets,
His gaze steady and icy.
"I’m here because Clara invited me,
Charles.
My finances are none of your business."
"Your existence is my business when you're leeching off my sister!"
Charles roared.
The music had stopped.
The entire ballroom was watching,
Waiting for Julian to shatter.
Julian slowly looked around the room,
Not with fear,
But with an analytical,
Cold precision.
He saw the greed in their eyes.
He saw the fear of losing status.
He saw the fragility of their entire empire.
"If I were you,
Charles,"
Julian said,
His voice barely a whisper,
"I would be more worried about your portfolio than my presence."
Charles scoffed,
Throwing his drink into Julian’s face.
The room gasped.
The red wine dripped down Julian’s suit,
Staining the cheap fabric.
Clara screamed.
Julian didn’t move.
He wiped the wine from his eye.
He smiled,
A terrifying,
Empty smile.
"That was a mistake,"
Julian said,
Turning to leave.
The game had begun.
The Winthrops didn't know it yet.
But they had just insulted the one man who possessed the keys to their destruction.
Julian walked out of the ballroom,
Not looking back.
The path was set.
Tonight,
The masks were off.
May you like
Tomorrow,
The war would begin.
