Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

Clara sat in the living room of the estate,

The newspaper lying on the floor in front of her.

She couldn't believe it.

She had read every word,

And the evidence was overwhelming.

Her father,

Her brother,

The family name she had been proud of her whole life—

It was all a lie.

They were criminals.

She looked up at the ceiling,

Feeling the walls closing in.

She was a Winthrop.

She was complicit in this,

Even if she hadn't known.

She had lived off the money,

The privilege,

The luxury.

She felt sick.

She stood up and walked to the door,

Needing to get out,

Needing to breathe.

But her brother stopped her.

"Where are you going,

Clara?"

Charles asked,

His voice sharp.

"I'm leaving,"

She said,

Not looking at him.

"I can't stay here.

Not after this."

"You're not going anywhere,"

Charles said,

Moving to block her path.

"We’re in the middle of a war,

Clara.

And you’re going to help us.

You’re going to testify that Julian framed us.

You’re going to tell the police that he stole the documents,

That he lied,

That he manipulated you."

Clara looked at him,

Shocked.

"Are you insane?

You want me to lie?

You want me to commit perjury?"

"I want you to save this family!"

Charles roared,

Grabbing her arm.

"You owe us,

Clara!

We gave you everything!

You’re going to do what I say,

Or I swear,

I will make your life a living hell."

Clara pulled her arm away,

Horrified.

She had always known her brother was arrogant,

But she had never seen this side of him.

The desperation,

The cruelty.

"I won't do it,"

She said,

Her voice steady.

"I’m done with this family.

I’m done with all of you."

She pushed past him and walked out the door,

The heavy wood slamming shut behind her.

She got into her car and drove,

Driving without a destination,

Her tears blurring her vision.

She didn't know where to go.

She didn't know who she was anymore.

She felt lost,

Alone,

And completely shattered.

She arrived at Julian’s apartment,

But it was dark.

She sat in her car for a long time,

Waiting for him,

Hoping he would appear.

But he didn't.

She realized,

With a sinking heart,

That she had lost him.

She had been part of the problem,

And she had paid the price.

She started the car and drove away,

Leaving the city behind.

She was finally free,

But she was also empty.

She had nothing left,

But she had the truth.

And the truth,

May you like

She realized,

Was the only thing that mattered.
