Chapter 3 - The Fragile Illusion

Morning broke over Boston,

Cold and grey.

Charles Winthrop III woke up to the sound of his phone ringing incessantly.

He groaned,

Reaching out to silence it.

The screen flashed with dozens of missed calls from his broker,

His lawyer,

And his father.

He picked up.

"Charles!"

His father’s voice boomed,

Furious and panicked.

"Have you seen the markets?

The logistics division is down twelve percent!

What the hell is going on?"

Charles sat up,

His head pounding from the wine and the adrenaline of the night before.

"I...

I don't know,

Dad.

What are you talking about?"

"Someone is shorting us!

Aggressively!

It’s like they know our leverage points!"

Charles went cold.

He thought of Julian.

He thought of the look in his eyes last night.

But no,

That was impossible.

Julian was a nobody.

A scholarship kid.

He couldn't be behind a multi-million dollar market attack.

"I'll look into it,

Dad.

Don't worry,"

Charles said,

Though his hands were shaking.

He got out of bed,

Walking to the window.

He looked out at the city.

He felt exposed.

For the first time in his life,

The invincibility of the Winthrop name felt like a thin veil,

Ready to tear.

Meanwhile,

Clara was sitting in the parlor of the estate,

Her eyes red from crying.

She hadn't heard from Julian since he left.

She felt a deep,

Gnawing anxiety.

She knew her brother was capable of anything.

He was cruel,

Yes,

But he was also desperate.

She loved Julian because he was the only thing real in her life of plastic,

Pre-arranged friendships and empty social climbing.

He was the anchor she clung to.

She decided to drive to his apartment.

She needed to see him.

She needed to know he was safe.

She pulled up to his building in her vintage convertible.

It was a modest,

Brick building in a part of town her brother would refuse to set foot in.

She went to his unit,

Knocking softly.

No answer.

She tried the door.

It was unlocked.

She pushed it open.

The room was empty.

It was tidy,

Almost unnervingly so.

There were no clothes on the floor,

No personal knick-knacks,

No evidence of a life lived.

Just a desk with a laptop and a stack of financial journals.

She walked over,

Touching the screen.

It was cold.

She felt a chill run down her spine.

Who was Julian,

Really?

She had known him for two years,

But she realized now,

Standing in this empty room,

That she knew nothing about his past.

She knew he was smart.

She knew he was kind.

But she didn't know his story.

She didn't know where he came from before the scholarship.

She didn't know his family.

He had always been evasive.

She had accepted it because she loved him.

But now,

The mystery felt dangerous.

She sat on his bed,

The silence of the room pressing in on her.

She heard a floorboard creak.

She jumped up.

Julian stood in the doorway.

He didn't look like the man she had met at the ballroom.

He looked sharp.

Dangerous.

His eyes were hard,

Focused.

"Clara,"

He said,

May you like

His voice devoid of the warmth she was used to.

"You shouldn't be here."
