Chapter 4 - Truths and Tides

Clara stared at him,

Her heart pounding in her chest.

"Who are you,

Julian?"

She asked,

Her voice trembling.

"This...

This isn't your apartment.

There’s nothing here.

It’s like you don’t exist."

Julian closed the door behind him.

He walked to the desk,

His movements fluid and confident.

He didn't try to hide it anymore.

"I am the man who loves you,

Clara,"

He said softly,

Though his eyes remained cold.

"But I am also a man who has been carrying a burden for twenty years.

Your family destroyed mine.

They ruined my father.

They left us with nothing."

Clara stumbled back,

Her hand covering her mouth.

"No...

That’s not true.

My family is...

We’re good people."

"You are not your family,

Clara,"

Julian said,

Taking a step toward her.

"But they are the monsters you’ve been shielding yourself from,

Even if you didn't know it.

They aren't just rich.

They are corrupt.

They manipulate the system,

They crush anyone who stands in their way,

And they do it with a smile."

He gestured to the computer screen.

"I’ve spent every day of the last five years preparing for this.

I didn't infiltrate your family because I wanted your money.

I infiltrated it because I wanted to take back what was stolen from me."

Clara looked at him,

Betrayal warring with confusion in her eyes.

"So,

It was all a lie?

Us?

The love?

The time we spent together?"

Julian looked at her,

His resolve wavering for a fraction of a second.

"The only truth in my life,

Clara,

Was you.

I didn't plan on falling for you.

But I did.

And that changes everything.

It makes this so much harder."

"Then stop,"

She pleaded,

Reaching for his hand.

"Stop this war.

Just walk away with me.

We can leave.

We can go anywhere."

Julian pulled his hand away.

He couldn't.

The machine was already in motion.

The stock market was already crashing.

The legal motions were filed.

There was no stopping the avalanche.

"I can't,

Clara,"

He said,

His voice thick with regret.

"It’s too late.

The damage is already done.

Your family is going to fall.

And I need you to understand that it has to happen."

Clara looked at him,

Seeing a stranger.

She realized the depth of the chasm between them.

She was a Winthrop.

He was the enemy.

"I can't be with you if you destroy them,"

She whispered,

Her voice breaking.

"If you destroy my family,

you destroy me."

Julian watched her turn and walk out the door.

He didn't stop her.

He couldn't.

He sat down at his computer.

The red lines on the screen were falling even faster.

He had won the battle,

But he had lost the heart of the woman he loved.

He stared at the screen,

The numbers blurring into a meaningless mess.

He was finally doing it.

May you like

He was finally getting his revenge.

And it felt like nothing.
