Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The autumn rain in New Jersey was unforgiving,

but it was nothing compared to the coldness waiting inside the Miller household.

Clara Miller pushed open the heavy oak door,

her body aching from a grueling twelve-hour shift at the local diner.

She was nineteen,

exhausted,

but holding onto a sliver of hope.

She had finally saved enough money to supplement her college fund,

the one her parents had promised to guard for her.

Tonight,

she was going to ask them to release the funds so she could pay her upcoming tuition.

But the scene in the living room froze her in her tracks.

Warm light bathed the room.

Her father,

Richard,

and her mother,

Eleanor,

were beaming with a warmth Clara had never received.

Sitting on the sofa was Leo,

her eighteen-year-old brother,

wearing a smug,

triumphant grin.

In his hands,

he held a gold-embossed folder,

the deed to the family’s suburban property,

and a cashier's check.

"What is going on here?"

Clara’s voice trembled,

a drop of rainwater falling from her hair onto the hardwood floor.

Eleanor’s warm smile instantly vanished,

replaced by a cold,

defensive sneer.

"Clara,

don't start,

we have made a decision,

we are signing the house and the savings over to Leo,

he needs the capital to start his new logistics business."

Clara felt the air leave her lungs.

"The savings?

You mean my college fund?

The money I worked two jobs to help you save?"

"It is family money,

Clara,"

Richard barked,

stepping shielding-wise in front of Leo.

"And Leo is the one who will carry on the Miller name,

he needs a head start,

girls marry into other families anyway,

you do not need a fancy degree to find a husband."

"A business?!"

Clara yelled,

her voice cracking with pure betrayal.

"Leo does not know the first thing about business!

He is going to squander it on parties and his gambling debts,

just like he always does!

You are throwing my future in the trash for him!"

"Shut up,

Clara!"

Leo snapped.

He stood up,

his face contorting with arrogant rage.

He grabbed a glass of dark red wine from the coffee table and hurled it.

The heavy liquid splashed violently across Clara’s face and soaked her white uniform,

dripping down.

"How dare you speak to me like that?"

Leo sneered.

"You spoiled brat!"

Clara gasped,

lunging forward in sheer frustration.

Before she could even reach him,

Richard stepped in.

With a harsh,

heavy-handed shove,

he pushed Clara back.

"Do not you dare touch your brother!"

The force of the push sent Clara flying backward.

She lost her footing,

crashing hard into a decorative ceramic side table.

The table tipped over,

and a large porcelain vase shattered into a hundred jagged pieces under her weight.

A sharp,

searing pain shot through Clara’s right hand.

She gasped,

lifting her palm.

A deep gash ran across her skin.

None of them moved to help her.

Not her father,

who looked at her with disgust.

Not her mother,

who was already looking at the stained rug with annoyance.

And certainly not Leo,

who just laughed.

"Look at what you did,

you clumsy failure,"

Eleanor hissed.

She walked over to the closet,

grabbed Clara’s worn-out backpack,

and marched to the front door.

With a swift,

heartless throw,

Eleanor tossed the bag out into the dark,

pouring rain.

"If you cannot respect this family and your brother,

you do not belong under this roof,"

Eleanor said,

her voice ice-cold.

"Get out,

find your own way,

we are done wasting resources on you."

Clara stood up,

cradling her injured hand against her chest,

the red wine on her shirt mixing with the dirt.

She looked at her parents,

the people who were supposed to protect her,

and saw nothing but empty,

hostile strangers.

She did not cry.

The tears froze in her eyes,

turning into a hard,

unbreakable resolve.

"You will regret this,"

Clara said,

her voice barely a whisper,

yet carrying a weight that made even Richard blink.

"Every single one of you."

She turned and walked out into the freezing storm,

the heavy oak door slamming shut behind her,

locking her out in the dark.

May you like

She was completely alone,

but she was finally free.
