Chapter 3 - A Foot in the Door

Sterling Capital was a fortress of glass and steel,

intimidating to anyone who did not belong.

Clara walked into the grand lobby,

wearing a cheap but neat thrift store suit.

The receptionist eyed her with skepticism,

but Mr. Sterling had left instructions.

Clara was escorted to the bullpen,

a chaotic floor of screaming brokers and ringing phones.

"You will start as a junior analyst assistant,

which means you fetch coffee,

organize files,

and observe,"

Mr. Sterling told her.

"I can do more,"

Clara insisted.

"Prove it,"

he challenged,

walking away.

Clara did not waste a second.

She fetched the coffee,

but she also memorized the portfolios of every senior broker.

She stayed late,

analyzing market trends and compiling reports that no one asked for.

Her dedication was terrifying to her peers,

but intoxicating to the executives.

Within a month,

she was catching errors that seasoned analysts missed.

She was polite,

ruthless,

and incredibly sharp.

Her past life felt distant,

but the scars remained.

Sometimes,

she would look at her hand,

tracing the faded line of the gash.

It reminded her of why she was here.

Meanwhile,

across town,

Leo's logistics business was launching with a massive,

expensive party.

He had bought a fleet of luxury cars instead of delivery trucks,

showing off to his shallow friends.

Richard and Eleanor toasted to their son's genius,

blind to the impending disaster.

They had forgotten Clara entirely,

assuming she was rotting in some gutter.

They had no idea that their discarded daughter was quietly learning how to dismantle empires.

At Sterling Capital,

a major client was threatening to pull their account.

The senior brokers were panicking,

unable to find a solution to the client's failing tech investments.

Clara stayed up for three nights straight,

building a restructuring plan.

She bypassed her immediate supervisor and walked straight into Mr. Sterling's office.

"I have the solution,"

she said,

dropping a thick file on his desk.

He read it in silence,

his expression unreadable.

"This is risky,

Clara,

highly aggressive."

"It is the only way to save the account,

and yield a twenty percent profit,"

she countered,

her voice unwavering.

Mr. Sterling presented her plan to the client the next day.

The client loved it.

Clara was immediately promoted,

skipping three ranks.

She finally had a real salary,

a real desk,

and a sliver of power.

She bought her first tailored suit,

dark navy,

sharp as a blade.

When she looked in the mirror,

she no longer saw the scared waitress.

May you like

She saw a predator,

ready to hunt.
