Chapter 9 - No Mercy

Richard slowly sank into his chair,

burying his face in his trembling hands.

He realized,

with crushing clarity,

that the brilliant,

ruthless CEO sitting before him was the daughter he had discarded.

He had bet everything on the wrong child.

"Clara,"

Richard pleaded,

his voice broken.

"I am sorry,

I was wrong,

I was so incredibly wrong."

"Apologies do not pay debts,

Richard,"

she replied,

using his first name to emphasize the severed tie.

"You taught me that the world is a business,

and resources should not be wasted on failures,

I am simply following your financial advice."

Leo,

still shaking with rage and fear,

tried a different tactic.

"If you kick us out,

the press will find out,"

he threatened weakly.

"They will know the great CEO of Sterling Capital left her own parents on the street."

Clara smiled,

leaning back in her chair.

"I already drafted the press release,

Leo,

it details how a generous firm tried to salvage a corrupt,

mismanaged family business,

but had to foreclose due to gross negligence and gambling fraud."

Leo paled.

"I have all the receipts of your illegal betting,

brother,"

she added softly.

"If you want to go to the media,

I will gladly hand the evidence over to the district attorney."

Leo shut his mouth instantly,

completely defeated.

"You are a monster,"

Eleanor sobbed from the floor.

"No,

Mother,"

Clara said calmly.

"I am the mirror,

I am exactly what you made me."

She slid a single sheet of paper across the table.

"This is a relinquishment form,

sign it,

and surrender the deed to the house and all remaining assets peacefully."

"And if we do not?"

Richard asked.

"Then I freeze your bank accounts today,

and the police drag you out in handcuffs tomorrow,"

Clara answered.

Richard stared at the paper.

His hands shook as he picked up the pen.

He looked at Leo,

who was looking away,

powerless.

He looked at Eleanor,

who was weeping hysterically.

With a heavy,

defeated sigh,

Richard signed his name on the dotted line.

He pushed the paper back to Clara.

"It is done,"

he whispered.

"You took everything."

"I took back what was mine,"

Clara corrected,

sliding the paper into the folder.

She pressed the intercom button on the table.

"Security,

escort these people out of the building,"

she commanded.

The two large guards walked into the room,

standing behind the Millers.

"Time to go,"

one guard grunted.

Richard stood up,

helping Eleanor to her feet.

Leo followed,

his head hung low,

stripped of all his former arrogance.

They walked towards the heavy glass doors,

leaving their legacy behind.
