Chapter 2 - The Taste of Bitterness

Sarah watched Brenda drive away,

her silver SUV gleaming under the unforgiving afternoon sun.

The cut on her arm burned,

a searing reminder of the target painted on her back.

She walked to her porch,

stumbling slightly,

the adrenaline beginning to fade into a dull,

throbbing ache.

Inside the cottage,

which was little more than a box of unpacked chaos,

she sat on the floor,

surrounded by the remnants of her old life.

She was not a stranger to adversity,

or to the cruelty of people who thought they were better than others.

Her past was a vault,

locked tight,

and guarded by secrets that would make Brenda Montgomery's skin crawl.

Sarah cleaned her wound with trembling hands,

using a clean rag,

and antiseptic she kept in her bag.

She needed to stay sharp,

or she would lose everything she had worked so hard to secure.

Oakhaven was supposed to be a fresh start,

a sanctuary,

but it was quickly shaping up to be a battlefield.

She pulled out her laptop,

the screen glowing in the dim,

dusty light of the living room.

She needed to know who she was dealing with.

Her fingers danced across the keys,

her movements precise,

and clinical.

Within minutes,

she was digging into the digital footprint of the Homeowners Association,

and the personal records of Brenda Montgomery.

There was always a trail,

always a mistake,

or a hidden transgression that people like Brenda ignored,

thinking they were untouchable.

Sarah found photos of Brenda at lavish galas,

drinking champagne,

and smiling for the cameras.

She found legal documents,

records of previous lawsuits,

and complaints filed by neighbors who had been bullied out of their homes.

The pattern was clear,

and the motive was obvious.

Brenda didn't just want a nice neighborhood;

she wanted a kingdom.

Sarah closed the laptop,

a grim smile forming on her face.

"You want a war,

Brenda?"

"You have no idea what kind of warrior you just walked over."

She stood up,

her arm still aching,

but her resolve hardening like tempered steel.

Tonight,

she would not sleep.

Tonight,

she would begin to take apart the fortress Brenda had built,

May you like

brick by miserable,

hypocritical brick.
