Chapter 7 - The Sabotage Exposed

The backlash began on a Tuesday.
Sarah woke up to find her car tires slashed,
and a derogatory message spray-painted on her garage door.
It was crude,
pathetic,
and desperate.
She walked out to her driveway,
her phone recording the damage,
her face calm,
and composed.
She knew who had done it.
It wasn't Brenda,
who was currently in hiding,
but one of the board members,
trying to intimidate her into silence.
She called the police,
and filed a report,
documenting every detail.
She didn't just want the vandalism reported;
she wanted the evidence preserved.
By noon,
she had matched the paint brand to a purchase made by the treasurer’s husband.
It was a sloppy move,
a desperate attempt to scare her,
and it was exactly the opening she needed.
She confronted the treasurer,
a man named Marcus,
at the local grocery store.
He looked nervous,
avoiding her gaze,
his hands shaking as he gripped his cart.
"I saw the paint,
Marcus,"
Sarah said,
her voice low,
and menacing.
"I know it was you."
Marcus paled,
his eyes darting around the store,
looking for an escape.
"I don't know what you’re talking about,"
he stammered.
"I have the receipt,"
Sarah continued,
her tone bored.
"And I have the video from my doorbell camera."
She leaned in closer,
her voice a whisper.
"You can either cooperate with the audit,"
"or you can explain to the police why you’re vandalizing property."
Marcus crumbled.
He was a man of small cowardice,
a creature of convenience who had been dragged into a conspiracy he didn't understand.
"Brenda made me do it,"
he confessed,
his voice cracking.
"She said you were ruining everything."
"Brenda isn't in charge anymore,"
Sarah said,
her voice firm.
"And neither are you."
She walked away,
leaving him standing in the aisle,
a broken man.
The sabotage had backfired.
Instead of silencing her,
it had provided her with the leverage she needed to break the board apart.
One by one,
May you like
she would turn them against each other,
until the whole house of cards collapsed.
