Chapter 4 - The HOA Trap

The following Wednesday,

the monthly HOA meeting was held in the community clubhouse.

The room was filled with the elite of Oakhaven,

the air heavy with expensive perfume,

and thinly veiled hostility.

Brenda sat at the head of the table,

her posture perfect,

and her expression one of bored superiority.

She was reviewing the agenda,

her eyes sweeping the room,

and landing on Sarah as she walked in.

The room went silent,

a collective intake of breath from the neighbors who had been briefed on the 'incident.'

Sarah took a seat in the back,

her notebook open,

her pen poised.

She wore a simple,

professional outfit,

contrasting sharply with the gaudy displays of wealth around her.

"We have a motion to address the recent decline in neighborhood standards,"

Brenda announced,

her voice dripping with disdain.

"Specifically,

the unauthorized,

unprofessional behavior of new residents who clearly do not belong here."

A murmur of agreement rippled through the room.

Brenda smiled,

a sharp,

predatory look.

"I move that we evict the tenant at the cottage,

and impose a permanent ban on any future property sales to non-vetted applicants."

The room erupted in applause,

or at least,

the sounds of polite,

privileged agreement.

Sarah waited,

her pulse steady,

her mind calculating the exact moment to strike.

She raised her hand,

a slow,

deliberate motion.

Brenda looked at her,

her eyes narrowing.

"The floor is not yours,"

Brenda said,

dismissively.

"You are a guest here,

at best."

Sarah stood up,

her voice calm,

and steady.

"The floor doesn't belong to you,

Brenda."

"It belongs to the association."

She walked to the front of the room,

her presence commanding,

and impossible to ignore.

"I have a counter-motion,"

Sarah said,

pulling a stack of documents from her folder.

"And I believe the residents here would be very interested to see what happens to their money."

Brenda’s smile faltered,

a flicker of panic crossing her face.

"Sit down,"

Brenda commanded,

her voice rising.

"You have no authority here."

Sarah didn't flinch.

She dropped the documents onto the table,

the sound echoing in the silent room.

"I have proof of embezzlement,

May you like

Brenda."

"And I think everyone here wants to know why the reserve fund is empty."
