Chapter 5 - The Cracks Appear

The silence that followed was heavy,
suffocating,
and absolute.
Brenda stared at the papers,
her face draining of all color.
The neighbors looked at each other,
their expressions shifting from judgment to confusion,
and finally,
to alarm.
"This is a lie,"
Brenda stammered,
her composure shattering like glass.
"She’s trying to discredit me!"
Sarah remained standing,
her posture relaxed,
but her eyes sharp as knives.
"Is it?"
Sarah asked,
her voice cutting through the tension.
"Because the bank statements say otherwise."
She looked around the room,
at the faces of the people who had been intimidated by Brenda for years.
"I’m not here to take over,"
Sarah continued,
her voice firm,
and persuasive.
"I’m here to restore the neighborhood."
Brenda stood up,
her chair scraping loudly against the floor.
"Security!"
she shouted,
looking toward the door.
But no one moved.
The security guard,
a man who had been on the receiving end of Brenda's temper more than once,
just crossed his arms,
and leaned against the wall.
The betrayal was silent,
but it was absolute.
Brenda looked around the room,
her gaze desperate,
searching for an ally,
but finding only cold,
calculating eyes.
"You can't do this,"
Brenda whispered,
her voice trembling.
"I built this place."
"You built a prison,"
Sarah corrected,
her voice low.
"And you were the warden."
Sarah walked over to the table,
and picked up the folder,
holding it open for anyone to see.
"I have records of every unauthorized fee,"
"every kickback from the landscaping company,"
"and every cent that went into your personal accounts instead of the maintenance fund."
She looked at Brenda,
her expression devoid of pity.
"I suggest you step down,
Brenda."
"Before the police arrive."
Brenda looked at the room,
the betrayal etched into the faces of her neighbors.
She turned and fled,
her designer heels clicking sharply on the floor,
her exit swift,
and humiliating.
The room began to buzz,
a low murmur of shock,
and revelation.
Sarah sat down,
her task for the evening complete.

and the reign of terror was over.
