Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Sewing Box

The house fell completely silent after the ambulance drove away,
leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Vanessa had retreated upstairs,
slamming our bedroom door in a fit of dramatic anger.
I walked slowly down the quiet hallway toward my mother’s bedroom,
my heart pounding heavily against my ribs.
The room smelled faintly of lavender,
but it felt cold and neglected.
I opened the large closet door,
searching through the neat rows of clothes until my fingers brushed against old fabric.
Hidden beneath a pile of winter blankets was the small,
blue sewing box Elena had mentioned.
I pulled it out,
placing it gently on the unmade bed.
My hands trembled slightly as I lifted the plastic latch,
expecting to find simple threads and needles.
Instead,
the top tray contained several heavy bottles of prescription medication,
none of which belonged to my mother.
Beneath the bottles lay a thick stack of folded legal papers,
covered in complex text.
I opened the first document and felt the blood completely drain from my face.
It was a forged power of attorney agreement,
granting Vanessa full control over my mother’s personal bank accounts and property.
At the bottom of the page,
my mother’s elegant signature had been clumsily traced,
clearly forced or faked.
The second document was an application for a high-density,
low-quality nursing facility located hours away from the city.
Vanessa had been planning to put my mother away forever,
turning her into a prisoner while stealing her lifetime savings.
I found bank statements showing massive cash withdrawals,
totaling tens of thousands of dollars over the last six months.
Every single withdrawal coincided with the dates I had sent large wire transfers from Saudi Arabia.
She wasn't just abusing my mother;
she was systematically robbing my entire family while I worked myself to the bone.
I took out my phone,
carefully photographing every single page and document inside that blue box.
My anger burned white-hot,
but I forced myself to remain perfectly calm and calculating.
I put the box back exactly where I found it,
ensuring Vanessa would not suspect a single thing yet.

She believed I was still the clueless husband who trusted her blindly.
She had absolutely no idea that her carefully constructed world was about to crash down around her.
