Chapter 4 - Opening the Digital Vault

I returned to the empty house late that night,
ensuring Vanessa was sound asleep upstairs.
I sat down at my desk in the home office,
locking the heavy wooden door behind me.
I opened my laptop,
the bright screen illuminating the dark room with a cold glow.
I had spent fifteen years designing advanced industrial surveillance networks for high-security facilities.
When I installed the new security system before leaving for Saudi Arabia,
Vanessa had complained loudly about invasion of privacy.
She had demanded the visible cameras be removed three months into my long deployment.
I had complied,
removing the obvious units to keep the peace between us.
What she never realized was that I had left the hidden,
pinhole cameras completely active.
These cameras did not stream to a standard home monitor that she could easily access or destroy.
They fully encrypted every single second of footage and uploaded it to a private server.
I logged into the secure server,
typing in my complex,
triple-authenticated password.
The archive contained exactly one hundred and twelve days of high-definition video footage.
I clicked on the very first clip from three months ago,
expecting to see arguments or neglect.
What I saw instead made my breath catch completely in my throat.
Vanessa was standing in our living room,
but she was absolutely not alone.
A tall,
well-dressed man was standing beside her,
his arm wrapped tightly around her waist.
I recognized him immediately as Bradley,
our family's crooked estate lawyer and a man I once trusted.
They were laughing together,
clinking expensive glasses of champagne while my mother sat neglected in the corner.
As the video played,
I watched Vanessa lean in and kiss him passionately,
confirming my worst fears.
The betrayal was complete;
she was running a massive scam with the very man supposed to protect our assets.

I sat back in my chair,
my mind racing as the puzzle pieces finally fell into place.
