Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Estate

Life inside the Rinaldi estate moved with a rhythmic tension that mirrored a calm sea before a storm. Over the next ten days, I established a strict yet warm routine for the boys. Wake-up at seven, breakfast together, school drop-offs handled by armed security escorts, followed by afternoon study sessions and structured playtime. The boys, who had previously destroyed every authority figure in their path, began to thaw.
Marco stopped testing my boundaries with physical rebellion and instead started bringing me his math homework, pretending he was only checking if I was smart enough to solve it. Nico learned to channel his aggression into soccer. Alessandro showed a surprising talent for drawing, filling sketchbooks with pictures of cars and dragon fortresses. And little Matteo, who hadn't spoken more than three words since his mother passed away two years ago, started holding my hand whenever we walked through the expansive garden.
Yet, the looming dark cloud of my own life never faded. Every night, after the boys were asleep, I sat at the desk in my third-floor bedroom, reviewing legal documents, checking my bank balance, and counting down the days until the custody hearing for my five-year-old daughter, Lucia.
My ex-fiancé, Richard Vance, was a powerful hedge-fund manager backed by a family with endless political connections. When I left him after discovering his ruthless, manipulative nature, he vowed to make me pay. Claiming I was an unfit mother without a stable home or substantial income, he had filed for full custody. I hadn't seen Lucia in three weeks—only allowed brief, monitored video calls that left us both in tears.
It was past midnight on a Thursday when I walked down to the kitchen to fetch a glass of water. As I stepped onto the main floor, I noticed a warm sliver of light spilling from Victor's private study. The door was slightly ajar.
Low, harsh voices drifted out into the hallway.
"The Moretti family is pressing the border docks, Boss," a heavy voice said—I recognized it as Sal, Victor’s chief security officer. "They know you've been focused on the legitimate shipping restructuring. They think you're vulnerable."
"Let them think whatever they want," Victor’s voice replied, cool and smooth as tempered steel. "If Don Moretti steps one foot onto my docks, execute Protocol Seven. No warnings."
"Understood. What about the custody situation regarding the nanny?" Sal asked unexpectedly.
I froze in the hallway, my heart dropping into my stomach.
"What about it?" Victor asked, his voice sharp.
"We ran a background check on her ex, Richard Vance. He’s hired private investigators to tail her. They’ve been parked down at the bottom of the estate drive for two days. Vance is trying to gather dirt on her employment here, planning to argue in court that she's raising her child in a 'mafia stronghold.'"
There was a long silence from inside the room. I held my breath, terrified that Victor would fire me on the spot to avoid unnecessary legal exposure or risk to his empire.
"Vance is a parasite," Victor said finally, his voice laced with a lethal quietness. "He thinks wealth gives him the right to strip a mother of her child. Tell the guards at the gate that if any of Vance’s investigators come within fifty yards of my property line, break their cameras and tow their cars. Serena stays."
"Boss... is that wise? Entangling us in a civil custody battle?"

"She brought order to my family when no one else could," Victor snapped softly. "She protects my sons. In this house, Sal, we protect our own."
I stepped back quietly, tears springing to my eyes. A man whom the world feared as a cold-blooded crime lord was offering me a shield I had spent years searching for alone.
