Chapter 4 - The Custody Battle Begins

The morning of the preliminary hearing arrived with an ominous, pale grey sky. I dressed in a dark navy tailored suit—the best clothes I owned—and stood in front of the foyer mirror, trying to hide the tremor in my hands. Today was the day the judge would decide if Lucia could be returned to my care pending the final trial.

As I reached for my purse, heavy footsteps echoed down the grand staircase. Victor descended, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair brushed back, looking every bit the dominant billionaire powerbroker.

"Where is your driver?" Victor asked, pulling leather gloves onto his hands.

"I called a cab," I said, offering a small, grateful smile. "It should be at the gate in five minutes."

"Cancel it," Victor ordered smoothly. "You're taking the Maybach. Sal is driving, and I am accompanying you."

I blinked in astonishment. "Mr. Rinaldi, you don't have to do that. The press, the courtroom... if Richard sees you with me, he’ll try to use your reputation against me."

Victor walked up to me, stopping just inches away. Up close, his cologne smelled of cedarwood, leather, and rain. His dark eyes held an intense, unwavering focus. "Richard Vance relies on intimidation because he has never faced true power. Today, Miss Valente, you will not stand in that courtroom alone."

When we arrived at the downtown county courthouse, news cameras flashed, but Sal and two discreet security guards cleared a path through the concourse without a sound. Inside the marble waiting area, Richard Vance was already standing with his team of high-priced corporate lawyers. Richard was tall, slick, and wore an arrogant smile—until his eyes met Victor Rinaldi walking beside me.

Richard’s smile faltered instantly. Color drained from his face as he recognized the man whose empire dwarfed his own financial firm ten times over.

"Serena," Richard stammered, stepping forward, his eyes darting nervously toward Victor. "What is this? Who is this man?"

"I am her employer," Victor answered before I could speak, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a weight that made the hallway drop into total silence. "And I suggest you address her with respect, Mr. Vance."

Richard tried to regain his footing, adjusting his tie. "This is a private family matter. Serena has no stable environment, no proper residence—"

"Miss Valente resides in a private estate with twenty-four-hour top-tier security," Victor interrupted coldly. "She earns a six-figure salary managing my household affairs. A full private suite has been prepared for her daughter, complete with educational tutors and medical coverage guaranteed by my firm." Victor stepped closer to Vance, lowering his voice to a dangerous whisper. "If you wish to examine financial stability and moral standing in court today, my legal team will publish every shell account, tax evasion filing, and offshore holding associated with your fund before the lunch recess."

Richard swallowed hard, his hands visibly shaking. His lead lawyer pulled him back, whispering urgently into his ear.

When the doors opened and the judge took the bench, the atmosphere had completely shifted. Vance’s legal team, intimidated by the terrifying legal powerhouse Victor had quietly deployed into the gallery, offered no effective counterarguments. The judge, reviewing my verified employment contract, stable residence proof, and clean record, issued an immediate temporary custody order.

"Lucia Valente is to be returned to her mother's care effective four o'clock today," the judge declared, striking the gavel.

I buried my face in my hands, weeping tears of overwhelming relief. For the first time in two years, the suffocating nightmare had parted. When I looked up, Victor was watching me, his eyes softening into something gentle and warm that made my heart leap in an entirely new way.
