Chapter 6 - A Threat from the Past

The fragile tranquility inside the Rinaldi mansion shattered three weeks later. The tension between Victor’s organization and the rival Moretti syndicate reached a boiling point. Don Moretti, feeling humiliated by Victor’s dominance over the port logistics network, sought a leverage point—and found it in our quiet routine.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. I was returning from the estate garden with Lucia and Matteo after picking fresh strawberries for dessert. As we neared the stone terrace, a sudden, sharp crack echoed through the air—the distinctive sound of a high-caliber gunshot.
Instantly, Sal and two security officers moved with terrifying speed, tackling us to the ground behind the heavy marble balustrade. "Sniper on the ridge!" Sal roared into his radio. "Lock down the perimeter! Code Red!"
Lucia screamed, clutching my shirt. Matteo, hardened by the implicit knowledge of his family's reality, didn't cry; he simply held onto my arm with white knuckles. I wrapped my body around both children, shielding them with my own torso while heart-pounding terror coursed through my veins.
Within seconds, gunfire erupted across the tree line as Victor's perimeter guards returned fire with heavy automatic weapons. Victor himself charged onto the terrace, his face a terrifying mask of rage, holding a sidearm. He threw himself beside us, pulling Lucia, Matteo, and me into his massive frame, shielding us completely from danger.
"Are you hit? Serena, look at me! Are you hurt?!" Victor demanded, his hands frantically checking my arms, my shoulders, my face.
"We're okay! We're fine!" I gasped, trying to keep my voice steady for the children. "Matteo and Lucia are safe!"
Sal radioed in, his voice breathy. "Target eliminated. Ridge secure, Boss. It was a Moretti scout team."
Victor pulled us up and rushed us inside the reinforced subterranean panic room beneath the mansion. The boys—Marco, Nico, and Alessandro—were already there, escorted by guards. Marco looked at me with wide, panicked eyes, running forward to check on Matteo and Lucia.
"They targeted my family," Victor growled, pacing the armored room like a caged tiger, his presence overwhelming. "Moretti crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed."
I stood up, leaving the children who were now huddled together playing a game to distract themselves, and walked up to Victor. "Victor, look at me."
He stopped pacing, his chest heaving, his jaw set so tight I thought it might crack. "I brought this danger to your doorstep. You and Lucia almost died because of my world."
May you like
"We didn't die because you protected us," I said firmly, taking his large, trembling hands in mine. "I am not leaving you, Victor. Do you understand? You don't get to push me away to 'protect' me. We are in this together."
Victor stared at me, his eyes searching my face for any sign of fear or hesitation. Finding only unwavering loyalty, he pulled me tightly into his arms, burying his face in my hair. "Then tonight, this war ends," he whispered deadpan.
