Chapter 8 - The Trial of Serena Valente
Before our new life could fully begin, one final shadow remained to be cleared: the definitive, final trial for full, permanent legal custody and adoption rights for Lucia. Richard Vance, desperate and bitter over his public humiliation, made one last desperate push in court, filing a malicious petition claiming that Serena was marrying a notorious figure under duress.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and high-profile figures. Richard sat at the plaintiff's table with a smug, spiteful expression, believing that no judge would grant permanent custody to a household with Victor Rinaldi's past history.
My attorney called our first witness to the stand: Marco Rinaldi.
At eleven years old, dressed in his neat dark suit, Marco walked to the witness box with extraordinary composure. The judge smiled gently at the boy. "Marco, do you understand why you are here today?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Marco said clearly, his voice carrying through the quiet courtroom. "I am here to tell you about Serena."
"And what would you like to tell me about her?" the judge asked.
Marco looked straight at the judge, then glanced over at Richard Vance with a sharp, mature gaze. "When Serena came to our house, my brothers and I were broken. We threw things, we scared people away, and we acted like monsters because we thought nobody cared about us after our mom died. Every other nanny ran away crying."
The gallery held its breath.
"Serena didn't run," Marco continued. "She made us dinner. She taught us how to respect each other. She made my dad laugh again. And when dangerous people tried to hurt us, she didn't hide—she covered my little brother and Lucia with her own body. She isn't just our nanny, Your Honor. She's our mother. And Lucia is our sister. If you take Lucia away from Serena, you’re breaking up our family."
A soft wave of emotional whispers swept through the courtroom. Next, the defense presented certified documents showing Victor's complete transition into legal corporate governance, along with glowing reports from court-appointed child psychologists who examined the children's pristine living conditions and emotional health.

The judge looked down at Richard Vance, her expression cold and stern. "Mr. Vance, this court finds your allegations entirely baseless and driven by bad faith. Permanent sole legal and physical custody of Lucia Valente is hereby awarded to Serena Valente, with full approval for adoption upon her upcoming marriage to Mr. Victor Rinaldi. Case dismissed."
The courtroom erupted into applause. Richard slumped into his chair, utterly defeated, while I fell into Victor's arms, crying tears of total victory and unburdened joy.
