Chapter 16 - The Verdict and Sentence

The jury deliberated for less than two hours before returning to the courtroom,
their faces grim and resolute,
Judge Harrison took his seat,
looking down at the verdict form handed to him by the foreperson,
stating quietly,
“Has the jury reached a verdict?”,
foreperson:
“We have,
Your Honor,
on all counts of grand larceny,
identity fraud,
corporate embezzlement,
and first-degree murder,
we find the defendant,
Richard Henderson,
guilty as charged,”
the words hit the courtroom like a thunderclap,
Victoria's empty seat feeling heavier than ever,
while Richard sat motionless at the defense table,
his eyes glazed over,
staring blankly at the polished wood surface,
Judge Harrison didn't hesitate,
stating in a cold, unyielding voice,
“Richard Henderson,
you abused your power,
betrayed your family,
stole millions from rightful heirs,
and took the life of your wife to protect your greed,
for the crimes of grand larceny and corporate embezzlement,
I sentence you to thirty years in federal prison without parole,
and for the charge of first-degree murder,
I sentence you to life imprisonment with no possibility of early release,
may God have mercy on your soul,”
the gavel slammed down with a deafening crack,
signaling the definitive end of his tyranny,
federal marshals stepped forward immediately,
locking handcuffs onto his wrists and hauling him away through the side exit,
leaving behind only the echoes of his downfall,
I stood up slowly from my seat in the gallery,
feeling a profound sense of weight lifting off my shoulders,
the ghosts of my past were finally laid to rest,
May you like
and the future stretched out before me,
bright, clean, and entirely my own.
