Chapter 9 - The Corporate Takeover

The afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse office,
casting long shadows across the gleaming mahogany desk,
I sat in the oversized leather chair that my father once used to intimidate everyone who entered this room,
now,
it felt perfectly fitted to my presence,
Arthur Sterling stood beside me,
reviewing a stack of newly printed shareholder certificates bearing my signature,
while Marcus coordinated the digital security override across the entire corporate network,
the intercom on the desk blinked softly,
Marcus pressing the speaker button to answer,
“Speak,”
the trembling voice of the corporate receptionist came through,
“Mr. Marcus,
Victoria Henderson and her son Tyler are downstairs in the lobby,
demanding to see Ms. Henderson immediately,
they are causing a scene,
security is trying to escort them out,
but they're screaming threats,”
I looked at Marcus,
then at Arthur Sterling,
who offered a calm, knowing smile,
stating softly,
“Let them up,
Chloe,
it's time they learned who holds the lease on their reality now,”
ten minutes later,
the private elevator doors dinged,
and Victoria and Tyler burst into the penthouse office,
their faces flushed with anger and desperation,
Victoria marched straight toward my desk,
her high heels clicking furiously against the hardwood floor,
shouting at the top of her lungs,
“Have you lost your absolute mind,
Chloe?!,
calling federal marshals to throw us out of our home like common criminals?,
you ungrateful, miserable little brat,
your father is going to slaughter you the minute he walks out of that jail cell!”,
I didn't flinch,
I didn't blink,
I simply leaned back in my chair,
crossing my hands neatly on the desk,
looking at her with cold, unyielding eyes,
Tyler stepped up beside her,
pointing an accusing finger at my face,
snarling,
“You think you own this place now?,
you're nothing without us,
you lived under our roof,
you ate our food,
you were just a charity case my dad kept around out of pity!”,
I slowly opened the top drawer of the desk,
pulling out a single, neatly folded document,
sliding it across the mahogany surface until it stopped right in front of Victoria's shaking hands,
stating in a voice so quiet yet piercing that the entire room fell dead silent,
“Read it,”
Victoria scoffed,
snatching the paper off the desk,
her eyes scanning the first paragraph,
then the second,
until all the color completely drained from her face,
her hands trembling so violently that the paper fluttered back down onto the desk,
it was the eviction notice combined with the asset recovery audit,
proving that every single cent,
every car,
every piece of jewelry,
and every account she and Richard possessed had been legally seized as stolen property,
whispering in absolute horror,
“This...
this isn't legal...
Richard will fight this...”,
Arthur Sterling stepped forward,
his voice sharp as steel,
“Richard Henderson is facing fifty years in federal prison with no possibility of parole,
and you,
Victoria,
are currently under criminal investigation for laundering stolen trust funds,
you have exactly twenty-four hours to surrender every luxury asset purchased with corporate funds,
or federal marshals will issue warrants for your immediate arrest,”
Tyler stared at his mother in sheer panic,
realizing their lavish, arrogant world had vanished forever,
while I stood up from my desk,
looking down at them with absolute calm,
May you like
stating quietly,
“Get out of my building.”
