Chapter 1 - The Unmasking at the Stairwell

The sentence that escaped Vivian’s lips hung in the air like heavy smoke,
choking the quiet lingering inside the marble foyer.
“Arthur told me you would check the cameras,”
she whispered,
her voice devoid of its usual sharp arrogance.
Daniel froze,
his fingers tightening against the smooth glass of his phone,
while the police officer immediately adjusted his posture.
“Who is Arthur?”
the officer demanded,
his hand resting deliberately near his duty belt.
Vivian did not answer,
her eyes fixed firmly on the floor as if the polished tile could swallow her whole.
Daniel stepped forward,
his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound disbelief.
“Arthur is my father’s estranged brother,”
Daniel said,
looking squarely at the officer.
“He was banned from this property five years ago after attempting to alter the family trust.”
The officer took a slow breath,
nodding slowly as he unclipped the key from his belt.
He turned toward Elena,
whose eyes were still wet with silent tears.
With a soft click,
the metal cuffs sprang open,
releasing her wrists.
Caleb let out a tiny sob,
wrapping both arms around Elena’s waist,
while Mason pressed his face against her side.
“I am taking these off for now,”
the officer said quietly,
“but nobody is leaving this entryway until we resolve what just happened on that screen.”
Daniel resumed playing the video,
holding the screen so the officer could see clearly.
On the video,
Vivian was seen walking down the narrow concrete steps,
looking nervously over her shoulder every few seconds.
She reached into her coat pocket,
pulled out a shiny silver key,
and inserted it into Elena’s locker.
She opened the metal door,
slid the velvet jewelry case inside,
and locked it securely once more.
Then,
she straightened her coat,
wiped the handle with a small handkerchief,
and hurried back upstairs.
The evidence was undeniable,
stark,
and absolute.
The officer turned toward Vivian,
his expression turning severe and cold.
“Ma’am,
you lied to law enforcement,”
the officer stated firmly.
“You planted stolen property to frame your son’s employee.”
Vivian lifted her chin,
trying desperately to regain her composure.
“I did what was necessary to protect this family,”
she claimed,
her voice quivering slightly.
“You do not understand what is at stake here,
Daniel.”
“Explain it to me then,”
Daniel said,
his voice dangerous in its calm depth.
“Because right now,
it looks like you tried to ruin an innocent woman’s life.”
Vivian glanced toward the front door,
as if expecting someone to walk through it.
“Arthur knows about the hidden accounts,”
she confessed softly,
her confident facade crumbling entirely.
“He threatened to release private records about Clara unless I found something to remove Elena from this house.”
At the mention of his deceased wife’s name,
Daniel felt a chill run straight down his spine.
“Clara?”
Daniel asked,
stepping closer to his mother.
“What does Clara have to do with any of this?”
Vivian swallowed hard,
her hands trembling inside her tailored pockets.
“Elena knows where Clara kept the red journal,”
Vivian whispered,
May you like
pointing a shaky finger at the nanny.
“And that journal contains the truth about how Arthur ruined our family business.”
