Chapter 6 - The Legal Battle Begins

The next two weeks were a whirlwind of legal filings, medical evaluations, and sleepless nights. Armed with the medical records from the safe deposit box, Julian brought in an independent team of neurologists to examine Geneva.
The results were startling. While Geneva did have early-stage, genuine Alzheimer's disease, the profound, terrifying state of dementia she had been in was largely exacerbated by the heavy, toxic cocktail of unauthorized sedatives Joel and Dakota had been slipping into her food. As the drugs slowly cleared from her system under Callie’s meticulous care, Geneva experienced longer and more frequent periods of clarity. She began to remember things—clearly and vividly.
Meanwhile, Joel and Dakota weren't going down without a fight. They hired an expensive, aggressive defense attorney who filed counter-suits, claiming that Callie was the one who had manipulated Geneva into signing the original will in the safe deposit box. They claimed Callie was financially desperate and using the elderly woman to secure a free apartment and a payout.
The local media caught wind of the story, and suddenly, Callie’s quiet life was thrust into the spotlight. Paparazzi and reporters began lingering outside her apartment building. Dakota appeared on a local news segment, shedding crocodile tears, claiming she was "devastated by her niece's greed" and that she only wanted her beloved mother-in-law to receive "professional care."
Callie sat on her couch, watching the broadcast with a hollow feeling in her stomach. "How can people lie like that?" she whispered.
Julian, who was reviewing court briefs at her kitchen table, looked up. "Because they are desperate, Callie. The grand jury just finalized the indictments. They are facing charges of elder abuse, corporate forgery, and grand theft. They know that if they lose this custody and guardianship battle next week, they are going to federal prison."
He walked over and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Don't let them get into your head. The truth is on our side. And more importantly, look at her."
Callie looked across the room. Geneva was sitting at the table, carefully arranging colored pencils. She wasn't screaming. She wasn't crying. She looked up at Callie, her eyes bright and filled with love.

"Callie, my sweet girl," Geneva said, her voice stronger than it had been in months. "Don't listen to the television. I know who you are. You are my protector."
The words acted as a shield around Callie’s heart. Let the world talk. Let Joel and Dakota play their dirty games. She was going into that courtroom to fight for the woman who had always loved her most.
