Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice

"Silence in the court!" Judge Evelyn Vance bellowed.

She looked down at Joel and Dakota, her eyes flashing with profound disgust. Joel was sweating profusely, his face pale, while Dakota covered her face with her hands, realizing their entire empire of lies had collapsed in a single moment.

"I have seen many cases of familial greed in my career," the judge said, her voice shaking with quiet anger. "But the utter cruelty displayed by the defendants against their own mother and grandmother is unparalleled. You did not just steal her money; you attempted to systematically destroy her mind for profit."

The judge didn't hesitate. She struck her gavel down with a resounding boom.

"The court hereby voids all previous power of attorney documents held by Joel Vance. Full, permanent legal guardianship of Geneva Vance is granted exclusively to Callie Vance. Furthermore, all assets belonging to Geneva Vance, including the proceeds from the sale of her home and her full $1.5 million trust, are to be immediately frozen and returned to the control of Callie Vance as her legal guardian."

The judge then turned her stern gaze to the bailiffs. "Officers, remand the defendants Joel Vance and Dakota Vance into custody immediately. They are to be held without bail pending their criminal trial for grand larceny, forgery, and felony elder abuse."

The courtroom erupted into cheers as the bailiffs walked over to the defense table. Handcuffs clicked loudly around Joel and Dakota’s wrists. As they were led away, Joel caught Callie’s eye. The malice was gone, replaced entirely by a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy. Callie didn't look away. She stood tall, watching them receive the justice they so richly deserved.

When the courtroom cleared, Julian turned to Callie and pulled her into a warm hug. "We did it, Callie. They are going away for a very long time. Your grandmother is free."

Tears of pure relief flowed down Callie's cheeks. "Thank you, Julian. Thank you for saving us."

"You saved her first," Julian smiled, wiping a tear from her eye. "You took her in when everyone else turned their backs. You listened to her when they tried to silence her. You're the real hero here."

Callie hurried out of the courtroom and rushed into the private waiting room. When she opened the door, Geneva was sitting by the window, watching the rain stop and the sun break through the clouds.

"Grandma!" Callie cried, rushing over and throwing her arms around her.

Geneva held her granddaughter tight, her grip surprisingly strong. She leaned back and looked into Callie's eyes, her gaze completely focused, serene, and filled with an ancient warmth.

"The bell stopped ringing, didn't it, sweetheart?" Geneva whispered softly. "We are finally home."
