Chapter 7 - Truth on the Stand

The day of the final guardianship and criminal hearing arrived. The courtroom was packed with reporters, onlookers, and the remaining members of the extended Vance family, most of whom had stayed silent, waiting to see which way the wind would blow.

Joel and Dakota sat at the defense table, looking polished, wealthy, and entirely unbothered. Dakota wore an elegant black dress, looking more like she was attending a charity gala than a trial for elder abuse.

Callie sat next to Julian, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Geneva was not present in the courtroom; Julian had arranged for her to stay in a quiet waiting room with Maya, protecting her from the stress of the proceedings.

The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Evelyn Vance (no relation), called the court to order. "We are here to determine the legal guardianship of Geneva Vance, and to address the emergency criminal charges of financial fraud and physical neglect brought forth by the state."

Joel’s high-priced attorney stood up first, delivering a smooth, manipulative opening statement. He painted Callie as an unstable, struggling baker who had practically kidnapped an old woman with severe dementia for financial gain. He presented forged documents showing that Geneva had "willingly" signed her property over to Joel's corporate entities.

Then, it was Julian’s turn.

Julian didn't give a dramatic speech. Instead, he relied on cold, hard, undeniable facts. He projected the medical records found in the safe deposit box onto the courtroom screens. He called the independent neurologist to the stand, who testified under oath that Geneva had been heavily over-medicated with dangerous sedatives that were never prescribed to her by a legitimate doctor.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Julian said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "We submit into evidence the forensic financial audit of the defendant's bank accounts."

Julian displayed a chart showing a direct pipeline of cash moving from the illegal sale of Geneva’s historic home straight into a bank account in the Cayman Islands under Joel and Dakota’s names. They had already spent over $200,000 of Geneva's money on luxury cars, vacations, and Dakota's designer wardrobe.

A gasp rippled through the gallery. Dakota’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer panic. Joel began whispering furiously to his attorney.

"But the most crucial piece of evidence," Julian continued, turning to look directly at Joel, "is a voice recording found on one of the flash drives recovered from Box 5821. Geneva Vance, knowing her mind was being stolen from her, had hidden a small voice-activated recorder in her living room before she was removed from her home."

Julian hit play on his laptop.

The audio was slightly muffled, but the voices were unmistakable.

“Just sign the damn papers, Geneva!” Joel’s recorded voice shouted, followed by the sound of a hand slamming against a table.

“I won’t... it belongs to Callie...” Geneva’s frail voice wept.

“Callie doesn't give a damn about you!” Dakota’s voice cut in, sharp and cruel. “Hold her arm down, Joel. Give her the blue drops. She’ll be cooperative by morning. Once we get the house, we'll dump her on the girl's doorstep and let her deal with the medical bills. It’s a perfect plan.”

The courtroom erupted into murmurs of horror. The judge slammed her gavel down, her face a mask of absolute fury.
