Chapter 8 - The Woman in Room 317The Blackwell Medical Center never slept.

At two seventeen in the morning, the hospital was still alive with movement.
Doctors hurried through corridors.
Nurses pushed carts.
Machines beeped behind glass doors.
Patients slept beneath fluorescent lights.
Nobody noticed the black SUV entering through the underground parking garage.
Marcus stepped out first.
Thorne followed.
Daniel stayed behind them.
Ethan wore a hood and mask.
The hospital was owned by Marcus's company.
At least, that was what Marcus had always believed.
Now he wasn't sure what belonged to him anymore.
They entered through a service corridor.
Thorne handed Marcus a security badge.
"Your old access code."
Marcus scanned it.
The door opened.
They moved deeper.
Ethan suddenly stopped.
Marcus looked at him.
"What?"
Ethan pointed.
"That hallway."
Marcus stared.
"What about it?"
"That's where they took me."
Six years ago.
The boating accident.
The hospital.
The night Ethan supposedly died.
Marcus remembered the chaos.
Doctors.
Police.
Blood.
His father's lawyers.
He had never been allowed inside this wing.
Because his father had told him it was restricted.
Marcus looked at the corridor.
"Why?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"Because Room 317 isn't a patient room."
They reached the end.
Room 317.
The door was locked.
Marcus scanned his badge.
Red.
Denied.
He tried again.
Red.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Move."
He entered a code.
The door opened.
Marcus looked at him.
"You knew the code?"
Daniel didn't answer.
They entered.
The room was empty.
One bed.
One chair.
One mirror.
Nothing else.
Ethan walked toward the mirror.
He touched it.
"Here."
Marcus looked.
A tiny fingerprint scanner was hidden beneath the frame.
Ethan pressed his thumb against it.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Let me."
Ethan looked at him.
"Why would it recognize you?"
"Because apparently everyone else has been lying to me."
Marcus pressed his thumb against the scanner.
A green light appeared.
The mirror slid sideways.
A hidden elevator waited behind it.
Nobody spoke.
They entered.
The elevator descended.
Far below the hospital.
When the doors opened, Marcus saw a corridor covered with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
His life.
His childhood.
His school.
His first company.
His wedding.
His daughter.
His father.
His mother.
Ethan.
Daniel.
Thorne.
Every major moment.
Documented.
Catalogued.
Observed.
Marcus walked slowly.
"This is my entire life."
Ethan nodded.
"Not just yours."
Marcus stopped.
One photograph caught his attention.
It showed him at age ten.
Standing beside his father.
On the back was a handwritten note.
SUBJECT ACCEPTABLE.
Marcus's stomach twisted.
Another photograph.
Age fifteen.
SUBJECT SHOWS RESISTANCE.
Another.
Age twenty.
SUBJECT MUST NOT LEARN ABOUT THE ARCHIVE.
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
"Subject?"
Daniel looked away.
Marcus grabbed him by the collar.
"What am I?"
Daniel's eyes filled with shame.
"You need to hear it from Ethan."
Marcus turned.
Ethan stood before a steel door.
"I didn't know the whole truth."
"Tell me what you know."
Ethan looked at the door.
"Our father wasn't building an empire."
"What was he building?"
"A succession system."
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"The Foundation doesn't pass power through inheritance."
Ethan placed his hand against the door.
"It passes power through selection."
Marcus stared.
"Selection of what?"
"People."
The door opened.
Inside was a massive circular chamber.
At its center stood a chair surrounded by computers.
A monitor turned on.
Marcus's face appeared.
Then Ethan's.
Then Mia's.
Then the newborn.
Then Elena.
Then Richard.
Five names.
Five profiles.
Marcus stepped closer.
"What is this?"
A female voice answered from the speakers.
"The Blackwell succession program."
Everyone froze.
A woman appeared on the screen.
Marcus recognized her.
Elena.
His dead wife.
She looked directly at him.
"Hello, Marcus."
He couldn't breathe.
Ethan whispered:
"Claire."
She smiled.
"That's not my name anymore."
Marcus stepped toward the screen.
"You lied to me."
"Yes."
"You died."
"I had to."
"You betrayed me."
She looked down.
"I protected you."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"You call this protection?"
"I kept you alive."
"You took my daughter."
"I saved her."
Marcus's voice cracked.
"From what?"
Claire's expression changed.
"From your father."
Silence.
Marcus stared.
She continued.
"Richard knows what Mia is."
Marcus froze.
"What is she?"
Claire looked directly at the camera.
"The key."
Ethan stepped forward.
"To the archive?"
Claire shook her head.
"To the Foundation itself."
Marcus stared at his daughter on the monitor.
"No."
Claire's voice became softer.
"Your daughter carries something your father spent decades trying to create."
"What?"
"A genetic marker."
Marcus felt sick.
"You engineered my family?"
"Your father did."
"Why?"
"Because the Foundation needs a successor."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
Claire looked at him.
"You were never supposed to inherit the empire."
Marcus stared.
"You were supposed to become its guardian."
The screen changed.
A file appeared.
BLACKWELL SUCCESSION SUBJECT: MARCUS RICHARD BLACKWELL.
Status:
ACTIVE.
Then another line appeared.
SUCCESSOR: MIA BLACKWELL.
Marcus stepped backward.
"No."
The screen went black.
The hospital lights suddenly shut off.
Thorne raised his weapon.
"Everyone down!"
Gunfire exploded through the corridor.
Glass shattered.
Ethan tackled Marcus to the floor.
Daniel crawled behind a console.
Thorne returned fire.
"How many?"
"Too many!"
Marcus looked at the monitor.
One final message appeared.
SUCCESSION BEGINS AT DAWN.
Then another line.
PHASE ONE: REMOVE THE FATHER.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan's face went pale.
"It means they're coming for you."
A bullet struck the wall beside Marcus's head.
Thorne shouted:
"Move!"
They ran toward the emergency exit.
Marcus looked back once.
The screen showed a live image.
Mia.
Holding the newborn.
And standing behind her—
Richard Blackwell.
His father smiled.
Then the screen displayed four words:
YOU HAVE UNTIL DAWN.
The lights returned.
The shooting stopped.
Silence filled the corridor.
Marcus stood frozen.
Ethan approached him.
"What are you going to do?"
Marcus slowly raised his weapon.
His face had changed.
The fear was gone.
The confusion was gone.
Only determination remained.
"I'm going to take my family back."
Ethan nodded.
"And then?"
Marcus looked toward the underground tunnel.
"Then I'm going to destroy the Foundation."
Behind them, Daniel quietly picked up his phone.
He typed one sentence.
HE KNOWS EVERYTHING.
He pressed Send.
Across the city, inside a dark penthouse, a woman received the message.
She looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
She wasn't Claire.
She wasn't Elena.
She was someone Marcus had never met.
Someone who had been waiting for this night for thirty years.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was an old photograph.
Richard Blackwell.
Standing beside a young Marcus.
And behind them—
A little girl.
A girl Marcus had never known existed.
The woman touched the photograph.
"Now," she whispered.
"The last Blackwell can finally come home."
May you like
Outside, the first hint of dawn appeared over the city.
And somewhere beneath Blackwell Medical Center, a machine older than Marcus himself began to power on.
