Chapter 10 - The Final Verdict

Six months later, the final sentencing hearing was delivered at the federal courthouse in Chicago. The case had become a landmark reference for domestic abuse and corporate fraud prosecution, changing the way the state handled coercive control cases.
Ryan Vance was sentenced to twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal facility for kidnapping, aggravated battery, and corporate money laundering, with no possibility of parole. Linda Vance received twelve years for conspiracy, financial fraud, and witness tampering, her assets completely liquidated by the court to pay for the remediation of the housing fraud victims and Emily's medical expenses.
Emily stood on the steps of the courthouse, the bright autumn wind whipping her hair. She looked radiant, her skin clear, the physical signs of her trauma long gone. In her arms, she held six-month-old James, who was laughing as he tried to catch the falling leaves.
Colonel Bennett stood beside her, his dress uniform immaculate, the silver eagle on his shoulder catching the afternoon sun. Marcus Reed walked up, sliding a final legal document into Emily's bag.
"The name change is official, Emily," Marcus smiled. "James is legally a Bennett now. The Vance name is officially dead."
Emily looked down at her son, then up at her father, feeling a deep, unshakeable peace settle over her soul. The journey had started with a secret, a thick blue blanket, and a room full of terrifying lies. But it had ended with the absolute truth, a family that refused to break, and a future that belonged entirely to them.

"Let's go home, Dad," Emily said, stepping down the stone stairs into the light.
"Roger that, sweetheart," the Colonel smiled, locking his arm in hers as they walked forward together, completely free.
