Chapter 5 - The Counter-Strike Begins

The next morning, the civilian court in downtown Chicago was packed with reporters. News of a high-ranking Army Colonel using Military Police to rescue his pregnant daughter from a domestic abuser had leaked to the local press, turning the case into a media circus.

Emily sat in a wheelchair, wrapped in her father’s wool coat, flanked by Marcus Reed and two armed security personnel provided by the base. Across the courtroom sat Ryan, wearing a cheap suit his mother had brought him, his wrists free after Linda posted his fifty-thousand-dollar bail.

Linda sat right behind him, her chin held high, glaring at Emily with pure, unadulterated venom.

The judge, an older man named Judge Alvarez, banged his gavel to bring the room to order. "We are here for the emergency custody and protective order petition filed by Emily Bennett-Vance against Ryan Vance. Counselors, state your positions."

Ryan’s lawyer, a slick man in a thousand-dollar suit named Henderson, stood up immediately. "Your Honor, this is a clear case of military overreach. Colonel Bennett used active-duty soldiers to break into my client’s home, assault him, and kidnap his pregnant wife. My client is a loving husband who was simply trying to manage his wife’s severe emotional instability during a difficult pregnancy. The injuries sustained by Mrs. Vance were the result of an unfortunate fall, which my client tried to prevent."

A murmur ran through the gallery. Linda smiled triumphantly from the front row.

"Your Honor, if I may," Marcus Reed stood up, his voice calm and completely unbothered by Henderson's theatrics. "We have submitted the medical reports from Fort Sheridan Hospital, signed by Major Harris, detailing three cracked ribs, deep-tissue hematomas consistent with blunt force trauma, and a distinct handprint bruise on the petitioner's abdomen."

"Pregnancy makes women clumsy, Your Honor!" Henderson interrupted. "A fall down the apartment stairs explains all of this!"

"Then perhaps Mr. Henderson can explain this," Marcus said, clicking a remote control. The large screen in the courtroom lit up with the hallway security footage. The gallery gasped as they saw Ryan violently drag a pregnant Emily back into the apartment against her will.

Ryan’s face drained of color. He looked frantically at his lawyer, then back at his mother.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his voice ringing through the chamber, "we have the banking records showing a systematic pattern of financial abuse and isolation. This wasn't a marriage, Your Honor. It was a hostage situation."

Judge Alvarez leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he glared down at Ryan. "Mr. Vance, step forward."
