Chapter 7 - The Legal Ambush
Three weeks after the court appearance, Emily’s physical wounds were healing, but the emotional scars remained deep. She had moved into the Colonel's quarters on the base—a beautiful, brick colonial home surrounded by towering oak trees. For the first time in months, she could walk out the front door without fear.
She sat on the sun porch, sewing a small blanket for the baby, when her father walked in carrying a secure diplomatic pouch.
"Marcus just left the federal prosecutor’s office," the Colonel said, sitting across from her. "Linda is trying to cut a deal. She offered to turn over all of Ryan’s financial assets to you in exchange for dropping the conspiracy charges against her."
Emily stopped her needle, looking at her father. "She wants to buy her way out of jail? Just like she tried to buy my silence?"
"She’s desperate, Emily," the Colonel said. "The media coverage has destroyed her real estate firm. The board forced her out yesterday morning. But Marcus found something else in the financial discovery phase. Something they tried very hard to hide."
He pulled a set of corporate deeds from the pouch. "The apartment you lived in wasn't just owned by Linda. It was registered under a shell company used by Ryan to launder money from a fraudulent construction scheme in the suburbs. He wasn't just an abuser, Emily. He was a criminal facing significant federal time before he ever laid a hand on you."
Emily felt a cold sweat break out on her neck. "He was using me... my name was on the joint bank account he used for those transfers, wasn't it?"
"Yes," the Colonel said, his eyes darkening. "He was setting you up to take the fall if the feds ever raided the operation. If you were declared mentally unstable or went to prison, he would get the baby and the full control of the funds your mother left you in her private trust."

Emily covered her face with her hands, the sheer scope of the betrayal leaving her breathless. "They didn't just want to control me, Dad. They wanted to destroy me completely."
"They underestimated who was standing behind you," Colonel Bennett said, standing up and placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "The federal prosecutor is filing a RICO indictment tomorrow morning. Ryan and Linda aren't just going to state prison. They're going away for a very long time."
