Chapter 9 - The Birth of a New Shield

Two weeks after the federal hearing, the stress finally took its toll. Emily’s water broke early on a rainy Tuesday morning, three weeks before her due date.
The installation hospital went into immediate high alert. Colonel Bennett arrived within ten minutes, still wearing his field gear from a training exercise, his face pale with anxiety as he rushed into the delivery ward.
"She’s doing well, Colonel," Major Harris said, stopping him outside the double doors. "The baby is slightly small due to the early labor, but his lungs are strong. Emily is fighting hard."
Inside the room, Emily clutched the delivery bars, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. The pain of the contractions was intense, but it was a clean pain—a productive pain that meant life, not the destructive violence she had endured in the apartment.
"You've got this, Emily," her father whispered, rushing to her side and letting her squeeze his hand with all the strength she had left. "Just breathe. The Bennett line doesn't break."
With one final, monumental effort, the room was filled with a sharp, loud, and incredibly angry cry.
Major Harris lifted the small, beautiful baby boy, wrapping him quickly in a warm blanket before placing him directly onto Emily’s chest. He had a shock of dark hair and tiny, perfect fingers that immediately reached out, latching onto Emily's hospital gown.
"He's perfect, Emily," the doctor smiled, wiping her brow. "Seven pounds, four ounces. Healthy and strong."
Emily looked down at her son, the tears flowing freely now, washing away the last remnants of the fear that had kept her prisoner for so long. She looked up at her father, whose eyes were shining with a rare, beautiful warmth.
"What's his name, sweetheart?" the Colonel asked, his voice rough with emotion.

"James," Emily whispered, kissing the baby's soft forehead. "His name is James Bennett Vance. But we're dropping the last name, Dad. From today on, he's just a Bennett."
Colonel Bennett smiled, a massive, proud grin that transformed his weathered face. He reached down, his large thumb gently tracing the baby’s tiny cheek. "Welcome to the regiment, James. You’ve got a whole army behind you."
