Chapter 6 - The Unmasking of Linda

Ryan stood up, his legs visibly shaking as he approached the podium. His previous arrogance had completely vanished, replaced by the panicked look of a boy who had finally realized his mother’s money couldn't save him from the law.
"Your Honor," Ryan stammered, his eyes darting toward the media cameras at the back of the room. "The video... it looks bad, but I was just trying to protect her. She was trying to walk out into a storm. She wasn't thinking clearly."
"Silence, Mr. Vance," Judge Alvarez said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. "I have reviewed the medical forensics and the video evidence. The court finds the petitioner’s claims of extreme physical and emotional danger to be highly credible."
Linda stood up from her seat, ignoring her lawyer’s attempts to pull her down. "This is a setup! That video was doctored by the military! You're taking the word of a disgruntled girl over my son, a respected businessman!"
"Ma'am, sit down or you will be held in contempt," the bailiff warned, stepping toward her.
"Let her speak, Your Honor," Marcus Reed said smoothly, turning to face Linda. "In fact, we would like to submit a secondary piece of evidence—the audio recordings from the apartment’s smart-home device, which Ryan installed to monitor his wife."
Emily looked up in surprise. She hadn't known about the smart-home recordings. Marcus had spent the previous night decrypting the apartment’s cloud storage server.
Marcus pressed the remote again. A clean, digital audio file began to play through the courtroom speakers.
“You’re lucky we even let you stay here,” Linda’s recorded voice boomed through the room, clear and filled with malice. “Look at you, crying like a pathetic little child. If you say a word to your father, Ryan will make sure you never see that baby. We own the doctors, Emily. We own the narrative.”
Then came Ryan's voice, followed by the distinct sound of a physical blow and Emily's muffled scream. “Shut up! Just shut up and lie under the blanket before I give you something else to cry about.”

The courtroom went dead silent. The reporters at the back were typing frantically on their laptops. Linda sank back into her chair, her face turning an ash-gray color as her own words sealed her son’s fate.
Judge Alvarez banged his gavel with a force that sounded like a gunshot. "The emergency protective order is granted in full. Ryan Vance is to be remanded into custody immediately without bail, pending formal charges of aggravated domestic battery and kidnapping. And as for you, Mrs. Vance," the judge said, pointing his gavel at Linda, "the state attorney will be reviewing these audio files for charges of conspiracy and witness intimidation."
