Evidence did not support that.
He came to argue.
He expected shouting.
Maybe persuasion.
Maybe threats about dissolving the company.
The shove was impulsive.
Ben struck his head.
At that moment Shane still could have called 911.
That was the first irreversible moral choice.
He did not.
Ben woke.
Asked for help.
Shane panicked about assault.
Then money.
Then business.
He used the old crawlspace because both brothers had accessed it during an electrical repair the previous winter.
He lowered Ben through the open boards after Ben’s injured leg made movement difficult.
He chained him because Ben kept trying to climb out.
He told himself it was temporary.
Then he took Ben’s phone.
Truck.
Coat.
He sent the suicide text and staged the vehicle at the river with the work van following.
By Saturday morning, police were searching water.
Shane had created a story bigger than he could safely reverse.
He returned Saturday night with water.
Sunday with a protein drink.
Monday when Judith called.
He turned music up to mask Ben’s voice.
Lila heard anyway.
He did not plan to starve Ben to death.
That was supported by food and water.
He also did not seek medical care.
He left an injured man chained in darkness while building a false disappearance around him.
