Chapter 8 - JUDITH’S STORY CHANGESJudith initially said Shane had been at the house twice after Ben disappeared.

Then phone-location and neighbor-doorbell records suggested four visits.
When Vega confronted her, Judith cried.
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“What happened during the other visits?”
“He checked the furnace.”
“Why?”
“Lila kept saying noises came from the floor.”
My pulse changed.
“What did Shane say?”
“That old houses make noises.”
“Did he inspect the crawlspace?”
Judith looked away.
“Basement.”
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he bring anything?”
She hesitated.
“A tool bag.”
Normal for a contractor.
Then:
“And groceries.”
“What groceries?”
“Milk. Bread. Protein drinks.”
Protein drinks.
We found two containers under the floor.
“What brand?”
Judith named the same brand photographed in evidence.
That did not prove Shane carried those specific bottles into the crawlspace.
But it tightened the circle.
“Did you see him take drinks to the basement?”
“No.”
“Did he leave with all the groceries?”
“No.”
Vega’s voice stayed calm.
“Judith, did you ever hear Ben?”
She began crying.
“I heard something.”
“When?”
“Monday night.”
Three days after disappearance.
“What?”
“A thump.”
“Voice?”
“I thought I heard my name.”
My skin crawled.
“What did you do?”
“I called Shane.”
Not police.
Shane.
“He came over.”
“What happened?”
“He went down to the basement. Came back and said pipes were knocking.”
“And you believed him.”
Judith covered her face.
“He’s my son.”
