Chapter 20 - BEN AND LILATheir first hospital reunion happened nine days after rescue.

Ben was in a wheelchair.
Right leg immobilized.
Scalp stitches removed.
Still thin.
Lila entered holding the stuffed rabbit.
She stopped at the doorway.
Ben cried immediately.
“Hey, bug.”
Lila did not move.
Then:
“You were under the house.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The adults had prepared.
No graphic details.
Ben answered:
“Uncle Shane made a very bad choice and kept Daddy somewhere he wasn’t allowed to keep me.”
“Why didn’t you open it?”
“I couldn’t.”
“I brought water.”
Ben covered his face.
“I know.”
That sentence broke everyone.
Lila climbed into his lap carefully around the injured leg.
Then asked:
“Were you dead?”
“No.”
“I told Grandma.”
Judith was not in the room.
Ben’s eyes changed.
“I know.”
Four years old and already carrying proof she had been right.
The therapist interrupted gently.
“Lila, it was never your job to rescue Daddy.”
She looked confused.
“But I told.”
“Yes. Telling was your job. Adults helping was ours.”

I wrote that sentence down later.
It belonged in every police training room.
